DAN: The Newest Brewers

By Dan O'Donnell

In a conference call this afternoon, the Brewers' top draft pick discussed his time with the Canadian Junior National Team, playing with a wooden bat, and whether he can hit his sister's curveball.

I'm going to take a wild guess that he can, since scouts think he has one of the quicker bats in this year's draft class and hits with exceptional power, belting 8 home runs and 24 RBI on a gaudy .486 against Dominican Summer League teams this spring.

The only question surrounding his game is what position he will play at the Major League level.  The Brewers picked him as a catcher, but he may not yet have the fundamentals.  But he is only 18 and will certainly learn the position in the minors for a few years.

During his conference call today, he said he would like to be in a Brewers uniform "in a year, year and a half."  I love the kid's confidence, but this Lawrie may need some more seasoning before he's ready to contribute to the big club.

With their two supplemental picks at the end of the first round, the Crew took a couple of pitchers--Jake Odorizzi and Evan Frederickson.
