JEFF: Crean and Crimson

By Jeff Falconio

Tom Crean's decision to jump from Marquette to Indiana was swift and shocking.  Year in and year out Crean was linked to job openings but he stayed in Milwaukee.  Now he's moving to the Big Ten and the Golden Eagles have a search on their hands.  This will be an interesting barometer to see how far Crean has taken this program.  When he was hired, Marquette was a mid-level Conference USA team.  Crean took them to the Final Four and now Marquette is an upper-level team Big East team.  What kind of coach can the school attract?  There are a few good names out there like Sean Miller and Lon Kruger, who have both tasted recent NCAA Tournament success.  I'm sure a few names from the NBA will surface as well.  Crean was a tremendous recruiter and he turned Marquette into a perennial tournament team.  Crean's remarkable recruiting ability should return Indiana to elite status and at the very least those Indiana-Michigan State games will make for good TV.  It's a shame to see Crean go because he was really a Marquette guy but life goes on and the school must ensure that the next coach will keep the Eagles in the national spotlight.
