DAN: Very Impressive

By Dan O'Donnell

Both of Wisconsin's Tourney-bound teams, the Badgers and the Golden Eagles have pounded out impressive wins in the past 24 hours.

But as we pare down the field of 64 (plus 1), the $64,000 question is which squad will be dancing longer?

The easy answer is Wisconsin, since they have played far more consistent basketball over the last two months and have a decided edge in defensive ability.  They are holding opponents to a nation's-best 54.3 points per game and today  held Michigan to just 34 points on 10-50 shooting.  Keeping opposing field goal percentages down has been a hallmark of this Badgers squad, which holds teams to 38.3% from the floor (sixth-best in the country).

Don't count out the Golden Eagles too quickly, however, as they have put together a nice Big East Tournament run and have won eight of their last ten games.  Marquette can score points in bunches, and you won't find a better 1-2-3 guard combination than Dominic James, Wesley Matthews, and Jerel McNeal, who dropped a career high 28 points on Notre Dame last night.

Should the Eagles beat Pittsburgh tonight and then win the Big East final, they'll head into the NCAA Tournament with a huge head of steam which, for a team as streaky as they have been since January, could push them into the Elite Eight.

Both Wisconsin and Marquette certainly have Elite potential, and two Tourney wins would be Sweet, but seeding will be very important.  Can the Badgers get a 2?  Can the Eagles avoid the dreaded 5-12 matchup?  Will Jeff Falconio's head explode with all of the Tournament resume information he's compiled?
