JEFF: Seahawk Down

By Jeff Falconio

That was as impressive a display of offense as you will ever see in the cold and snow.  The Packers completely obliterated Seattle despite spotting the Seahawks an early 14-0 lead.  There's been a lot of talk about inexperience and playoff jitters for the Packers but this young team showed a lot of maturity early on after two turnovers led to the 14-0 score.

It was still early in the game and there was no need to panic.  Rather than launching it deep downfield to try to make something happen, Brett Favre settled in and hit Greg Jennings on an intermediate route.  Then James Jones separated from Seahawks defenders for a 31 yard gain on a short pass.  Suddenly the Packers looked like they did throughout the regular season and it was 14-7.

Then on the next series Ryan Grant was given the opportunity to atone for his early fumbles and he responded with 49 yards on 5 carries and a touchdown.  Tie game.  From there it was all over.  Seattle put together two long drives after that but those drives resulted in field goals.  The Seahawks couldn't run and defensively they couldn't stop the run.  In the playoffs, that spells trouble.  The Packers did exactly what they had done throughout this improbable season.

Favre was magnificent.  His numbers don't pop out at you but his consistent accuracy, especially on third down, kept momentum in Green Bay 's favor throughout the evening.  Ryan Grant seemed to get better as the game wore on, finishing with 201 yards on the ground.  Who thought the Packers would be capable of those kind of rushing numbers?  And every time the Packers needed a stop, somebody stepped up from broken up passes to solid open field tackles.

So it's on to the NFC Championship game.  One of the youngest teams in the NFL grew leaps and bounds today and the Packers are one step closer to football's ultimate prize.
