JEFF: AFC Wild Card Preview Tennessee at San Diego

By Jeff Falconio

This is a rematch from December 9 when the Titans couldn't hold onto a 17-3 fourth quarter lead.  San Diego came from behind to win 23-17 and then ripped through their next three opponents to not only win the AFC West but serve notice to the rest of the NFL that the Chargers are back.  Tennessee had to pull out a gritty win against Indianapolis last week to nab the final playoff spot but in the process suffered a big setback when quarterback Vince Young was knocked out of the game.

Young is expected to play today but the Titans are hurting on both sides of the ball.  The question I've asked about Tennessee all year is whether or not they had enough weapons on offense to make a run to the postseason.  It's crucial that Young plays today because he is the unquestioned leader of this team.  However, with injuries to Lendale White and Roydell Williams, Young will only be able to do so much against San Diego's rugged defense.

The Chargers have won six in a row and in that stretch LaDainian Tomlinson has found his groove.  Furthermore quarterback Philip Rivers has looked more comfortable under center.  In my opinion Rivers is still prone to make mistakes but the Chargers upgraded the offensive weapons surrounding Rivers with the acquisition of Chris Chambers.  The supporting cast has carried this team into the playoffs.  Too many injuries to Tennessee and too much confidence from San Diego should translate into an easy win for the Chargers today.
