JEFF: The Fallout

By Jeff Falconio

By now everyone is aware of the Mitchell Report and its damaging claims of widespread drug use in Major League Baseball.  It shouldn't really surprise baseball fans.  It shouldn't be that shocking that all-stars and MVPs have allegedly juiced up.  We knew this day would come.  The steroid issue has hung over the sport like a black cloud.

The question now becomes what will MLB do about it?  I like the fact that Bud Selig wants to aggressively pursue the recommendations by the report but how willing is the players union to go along with it?  I do think the blame lies among everybody  involved but the players themselves wanted tougher testing prior to 2005 and the union wouldn't allow it.

My feeling is that what's done is done.  Some players cheated and as such the fans were cheated out of true baseball greatness.  That's in the past though.  Baseball is resilient and has gotten through tough times before.  Most assuredly, MLB will get through this storm as well.  Baseball needs to close the book on steroids with tougher testing and a rigorous attempt to eliminate HGH from the game.  Hopefully, this signals the end of the Steroid Era.
