DAN: Say it Ain't So, CoCoThe Reds? Seriously, the Reds? Okay, Frankie, if you really want as good a chance of getting 40 saves next season as Marge Schott's dog, bon voyage. Hope that $46 million buys you enough stiff martinis to get you through another 90-loss season.
But at least I'm not bitter.
In truth, I always expected CoCo to depart after this season. The guy is 32 and had one last chance at a monster deal. Can you really blame him for chasing it? Purists will grumble about loyalty to a young team on the rise, about a sense of duty to an organization that essentially rebuilt a struggling career, but that's hogwash. Elite ballplayers are mercenaries and will always fight for the largest payday.
Doug Melvin had a maximum offer--one that I feel was eminently fair given Cordero's age and abilities--and the Reds simply outbid him. Call it a "Michael Corleone," folks; not personal, just business.
Now the Crew will just have to light CoCo up like Sonny at the tollbooth the first time they face him! Most Popular |
