Could reigning AL Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia really be a Brewer by the trade deadline?  ESPN.com's Buster Olney certainly thinks so, calling the Crew the top contender for his services since they're "motivated, they're contending, they have need, and they have the prospects."

However, he says that Tampa Bay "could present a serious problem for the Brewers" if they seriously consider bolstering their own starting rotation.

GM Doug Melvin is wisely considering all options as the deadline approaches, even saying he would be open to "renting" Sabathia for half a year and then letting him test the free agent market once his contract expires after the season.

To me, that would be the height of stupidity.  Think Scott Linebrink.  Think Gary Payton.  Did either of those deals work out?  The Brewers need a long-term commitment from Sabathia to even consider parting with one of their top prospects--outfielder Matt LaPorta, third baseman Mat Gamel, shortstop Alcides Escobar, or catcher Angel Salome--one or more of whom would almost certainly be part of the deal.

True, with Sabathia, the Brewers could make a serious run deep into the playoffs this year, but with that much talent at AA-Huntsville combined with Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, and J.J. Hardy at the Major League level, they could set themselves up to be a serious contender for the next decade.
