Monday's Packer Reaction

By Bill Michaels

Did you ever have something so passionate to say and you have so much to point out but you’re not really sure where to begin, that’s the way I feel today.

I’ll start here….
The Packers organization moves like an iceberg, very slow and methodically. So, for those of you thinking that you’d see Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson sitting on the corner of Oneida St. and Lombardi Ave. holding up “Will Run Your Football Team Into The Ground For Food” signs, you can forget it.

The reality is this; the Packers have 8 games to play. The Packers have 8 games to turn things around (not that I believe they will). Mike MCCarthy and/or Ted Thompson are going to be given until the end of the season to “right the ship” and then evaluations will be made, and rightfully so. There is hardly ever an instance where a firing proves to be the ignition for a team to take off and become successful. Yes, the Colorado Rockies, this past season, were an exception to the rule but for the most part, the rule is, wait until the end of the season to make wholesale changes. If you fire McCarthy now you’re basically firing your head coach and your offensive coordinator. Also, if you relieve McCarthy of his duties this minute, you pretty much guarantee that you’re putting a lame duck interim into the mix and do you really think that he’ll garner much respect from players that know he’s gone too at the end of the year? You ride the wave, good or bad, until you’ve reached season’s end and then go from there.

There are some things that you can hold on to if you’re a Packers fan;
*  Jermichael Finley and Jordy Nelson are both due back this week and will add some much needed options for Aaron Rodgers in the offense.

*  The injury to Tauscher doesn’t appear to be serious and he should be back this week as well.

*  The run game showed some promise yesterday and could be a factor, if used properly, for the remainder of the season.

*  The defense, quarterback pressure aside, still is better than it was last year. If the D is not constantly put in bad field position, they do show better capability to get off the field and give the ball back to the offense.

*  Does this team have the capability to beat Dallas, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, Seattle…Yes. Will they, that is yet to be seen. I’ve got to tell you, confidence isn’t running high right now. Shocking, I know. If the Packers play mistake free football, they’re not as bad as their record would indicate but self discipline has been the biggest stain upon the Mike McCarthy’s tenure and will ultimately cost him his job.

Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version, keep standing with your passion and optimism but remember that the dog stuff of reality is on your shoe.

I do not believe in his philosophy and supreme arrogance of the draft and more than only picking players high on his board and not for need. If this team does not get to the playoffs then he has to go and MM with him. I am not going wait another 5yrs. We are a worse team now than when he took over, look at the records, and its been 5yrs, and as the frosting on the cake you have

The inevitable problem in having a GM and a head coach is that the two have to be linked. To fire MM alone would allow Ted to hire another head coach who, if any good, would have to be offered a long contract. If you then decided later that Ted has to go, you now have a coach who was hired by Ted and so it continues. The lesson learned from Bob Harlan is that you have to start with the GM and let him decide on the coach. That's what was done in bringing Ron Wolf aboard who then fired Infante.

I agree the Packers are the most undisiplined team in the NFL. Management/coaches are passive and have no backbone! Did you see the fire and enthusiasm in Denver last night. There was passion, excitement, and drive from both teams. There was great tackling, excellent blocking and precise execution. Our players are an extension of the coaches and it shows. These players need to be disciplined just like us parents discipline our children, otherwise the infractions will happen over and over!

I think we should all take a minute and look at the upside of the season. Take for example merchandising. The Packers could make a killing on Aaron Rodgers jerseys and helments that include some field terf on the back and in the face mask, a collectable set of sieves for the kitchen each featuring a lineman and number of sacks given up, a clock that runs slows signed by Aaron Rodgers, and a tape deck with no record button and comes complete with standard prerecorded press conference sign by McCa

Hey Bear fan... good coaches know how to motivate their players and make sure that mistakes don't happen eight weeks in a row. The "brass" is responsible for penalties, sacks, etc. If they know this is happening wouldn't you agree that they should take care of it before it happens? Try benching someone (insteading of rotating guys through) What is this high school football. You have a coach that only wants to beat 1 team. Well congrats... You may win one more game this year.

The team needs to get back to basics. They don't tackle, they would rather try and strip the ball and allow the runner another 5-10 yards on any given play. Last week against Minnesota when Jolly gave that guy a head butt and said "It is what it is"...well I would bench him the rest of the game and a huge fine and tell him "It is what it is!! No discipline and that allowed Minnesota to keep their drive alive and score.

Players, coaches, and fans want wins. Thompson believes in building a team using youth. But winning franchises are successful with a combination of youth and veterans. There are two measures of success. First - winning. Second - financial. Thompson's actions reveal his intentions - financial success. With sellouts since 1960 and 70,000 waiting to buy season tickets, he doesn't need to spend $20-30 mil on free agents. Success is not guaranteed. For Thompson, winning isn't everything.

I would hardly call our 170 net rushing yards promising. Grant looked better, but maybe that was just because Tampa's D blew?!? It sure wasn't because our O-Line is made up of perenial pro bowlers!!!

Like you BIG U I would like to think there is still time to right the ship as we are only at the halfway point in the season. But Mr. McCarthy has shown no capacity to make any neccessary adjustments through his now disasterous time in GB. And this is his team along with TT. We have had a mostly healthy season so far. Think of all the guys we lost last year for an extended period of time. Our #1 team is looking pathetic like a ship without a rudder. Do players go or MM TT?

He also has said he wants part ownership of a team. how is he going to own the packers? Keep dreaming people. TT and MM will be your GM & Coach Next season. I doubt Bill Cowher would come as he is a AFC kind of guy and I believe he is waiting to come back so he can spend time with his last child.

If you thought the packers were going to the playoffs at the start of the season you had unreasonable expectations. I know bill says it takes 6 to 8 games to get comfortable with the 34 D but in reality it takes a whole season to run the whole playbook. Heck the packers can't even play whole package because Al Harris struggles in zone coverage. this was coming out back in the mini camps. I really think a lot of the frustration is the unrealistic expectations by the fans.

To even think the Packers belong on the same field as Dallas and San Francisco right now, is the ultimate of 'homer' lines, let alone win those games. And even if I had your wallet in my hand I wouldn't put anything on the Packers beating Chicago and Seattle. Also, ESPN and Fox are studying it now and it's time you point it out, 1/2 those sacks are on Rodgers holding the ball way to long. #4 still rules!

The only thing I'm afraid of is Thompson preemptively firing McCarthy to save his onw job. Then we're stuck with him for at least another season. WOW!
