Packers @ Buccaneers; Final Thoughts

By Bill Michaels

The Packers played an uninspired game vs. the Buccaneers;

1st Half:

*  Once again, a holding penalty on a punt return (Brandon Underwood R) and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Shawn Slocum’s special teams stink again this week. The harder they try, the worse they perform. Mason Crosby’s kicks are the bright spot. 3 touch-backs thus far. Coming into the game Crosby had 5 total this season.
*  The revolving doors for Tauscher, Clifton, Barbre and Lang have led to inconsistency on the offensive line. Protection and the running game can’t get into a rhythm.
*  Solid pass and catch, Rodgers to Jones. If Jones could stretch the field, that would take a lot of pressure off of Jennings to be the speedster.  Jones needs to be seen more in that light.
Run offense has been pretty good; Grant with 10 carries for 55 yards. DON’T abandon the run in the 2nd half, stick with it and wear the Tampa D down. The one benefit from the rotation of tackles, the Packers should be fresh and able to grind on the Bucs D-line.
*  More confusion on the defensive side of the football. The Packers are 8 games into the season and still aren’t sure who should or shouldn’t be on the field. I know Chillar’s absent with the hand injury but this kind of problem is persistent and will ultimately cost McCarthy his job if he can’t curb the continual mental mistakes.
*  The Packers defense having trouble creating any type of rush. There still seems to be wonderment when it comes to the use of Aaron Kampman. Maybe it’s just me but allow Kampman to put his hand on the ground in passing situations, pull Jolly and bring in an extra LB.
*  Not taking advantage of the Freeman interception could come back to haunt the Packers.
*  Tampa Bay’s energy is more dominant than the Packers. Period. When you let a bad football team feel as if they can win, they’ll bite you.

2nd Half:

NOTE:
Packers are now 0-24 scoring TD's on their opening drive of the 2nd half since the start of 08.  (Stat from Greg Bedard of JSOsports.com)

*  The special teams woes continue in the second half.  A Packers touchdown followed up by an 83 yard kick off run back.  Pathetic!
*  6 sacks on Rodgers in this game.  Most were coverage sacks.  No one open down field and a quickly collapsing pocket.  Rodgers clearly hung on to the ball too long.  I understand his competitive side trying to make a play but there comes a time that your mental clock has to tell you to get rid of the ball.
*  With 1:38 to go in the game, the Packers have been called for 5 penalties (35 yards) the Buccaneers 1 penalty (10 yards).
*  Daryn Colledge couldn't look any worse if he had to.  He was shoved around all day by Hovan and White.  He's been pretty consistent over the last couple of years, not great but consistent, but today was one of his worst as a pro.
*  Last week, vs. the Vikings, the Packers were pretty dominant in many of the important categories except the score, today...same thing;  TOP  Packers 35:17 / Bucs 24:43   TOTAL YDS  Packers 404 / Bucs 279  TOTAL RUSH YDS  Packers 170 / Bucs 81.  Bottom line, special teams, turnovers, sacks that kill drives all equal a 10 point loss.
*  The second half philosophy to abandon the run, when it was clearly working against the 30th ranked run defense in the league, was questionable.

*  With this loss, Mike McCarthy and his staff are officially "on the clock".
For McCarthy to say to Larry McCarren after the game, "Maybe I worked them too hard this week" is mind boggling.
The effort, the talent level, the poor execution vs. a bad football team, players questioning the coaching staff, managerial moves....all will bring into question everything we've seen thus far.
I've said it before (Previous blogs = Audition TimeObstinance) I don't mind the philosophy to build through the draft if....IF you're hitting on 50% of your draft choices and one player per draft is a future pro-bowler.  If you remain true to the draft and a draft or two doesn't pan out and you're picking up average players at best, all that you're doing is setting back a franchise with each inept year.  With each year that you're not truly "building up" your franchise, it takes two years to repair the damage.

This is what happens when you have the youngest team in the league three years running. You keep younger players, AKA cheaper, and expect to put a superior product on the field?? Any veterans that you keep are also cheaper and/or unsuited for the positions you have them placed in. This isd not the way you build a winning team. Even Liombardi and Wolf , who used younger players, either kept some veterans around or went out and got veterans who could actually help the team. FIRE TED!
