There’s only so many ways you can spin the fact that the Packers are 4-3 and haven’t beaten a winning team. There’s only so much pain a Packers fan can endure when it comes to their former hero ripping their hearts out. There are only so many times you can scratch your head as to who’s to blame when players vent against the coaching staff and management. There’s only so many times you can listen to excuses regarding the same problems. You add it all up and it becomes the angst as to which direction this proud franchise is headed.
Getting past the Favre divorce is harder for fans than it is for those behind the walls of Lambeau Field but what you can’t get past is a peering look at the philosophy Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have taken to build and run this team. At this point you could say that the rest of the season is an audition for job security and philosophical confidence.
For a General Manager, hitting on fifty percent of your draft choices is doing a pretty solid job. Ted Thompson is below that threshold at this point. While players from the ‘05’ thru ‘09’ drafts are contributing, are they really making an impact?
Out of the 51 players selected by Thompson; Aaron Rodgers, Nick Collins, Greg Jennings, Johnny Jolly, James Jones, Mason Crosby, Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley and Clay Matthews (9) can be considered impact players. Brady Poppinga, A.J. Hawk, Jason Spitz, Will Blackmon, Allen Barbre, Desmond Bishop, Josh Sitton (7) can be considered adequate players with potential. Guys like B.J. Raji, T.J. Lang, Breno Giacomini, Justin Harrell, Quinn Johnson, Brandon Underwood (6) are considered works in progress and the rest are either roster fillers or have been cut or traded. That gives you 22 out of 51 players with a contribution to your football team (43%). If Lang, Sitton and Barbre all pan out then drafting for the future offensively has been a success. The guy, unfortunately, that’s paid the price for the experiment of replacing 3 out of 5 trench guys has been Aaron Rodgers (sacked 31 times in 7 games).
Meanwhile, Mike McCartthy’s had to deal with a year and a half’s worth of undisciplined, inconsistent football. The same problems seem to plague his football team week in and week out. You can almost predict the breakdowns just insert a different name each week. Key penalties, special teams, pressureless defense and, at times, predictable play calling have haunted McCarthy and become the albatross that will ultimately bring him down.
So you look at the remaining 9 games of this season and believe that the Packers have to win 6 to have a legitimate shot at getting into the post-season. Here’s where the auditions come in. Since Thompson has remained steadfast in not venturing out into the free agent market then his drafts have to be spot on. 43% isn’t spot on. The offensive line has to improve to become a force. Not only in the protection of Aaron Rodgers but in the running game. This group needs to begin blowing up holes and creating run lanes that last longer than the blink of an eye. Defensively, B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews have to continue to improve as well. If this happens, then you can say that Thompson’s rebuilding plan just took a year longer than expected and he would be cut some slack. For McCarthy, the continual mistakes that have plagued this team have to be corrected immediately. The head coaches, “We’ll look at the tape and get those cleaned up”, refrain falls upon deaf ears now. It’s been 7 games, the defense should be “getting” the new system and begin to show some real signs of progress and pressure. McCarthy’s offense will get Nelson, Finley and Hall back. With the full implement of weaponry, you would expect this group to start putting up some daunting numbers even on the better defenses. Shawn Slocum’s special teams need to do two simple things, stay in your lanes and keep contain. Easier said than done I know but it really is just that simple.
If the Packers cross the finish line at 8-8 or worse, wholesale changes are in this franchises future. The downhill roll most likely will begin. Either Thompson will can his handpicked leader or Ted will be thrown out with the bath water as a new era will begin. The board of directors was spilt regarding the Favre saga and even with an 8-8 season, in my opinion, behind closed doors Thompson won’t be given the benefit of the doubt. If Thompson remains then most certainly, pressure from above will dictate a change. There is a built in excuse however; the change to the 3-4 and the year’s learning curve that goes along with it but I don’t think that’ll be enough to save jobs. If this team ends at 9-7 and falls just short of the playoffs, then I believe that it’ll be enough to keep the two key components, McCarthy and Thompson, but the periphery, somewhere, would pay the price.
So starting today; Players, coaches, management…….take your places. It’s time to raise your scripts (playbooks) and perform for your future depends on it.

TT and MM have to lose their GB jobs at the end of the season. It appears that MM and his coaching staff are losing the team, John Gruden is my pick to replace him. TT has to go because a new GM is in order so Gruden can expect some continuity in his immediate management. When the Pack chooses a new GM 2 interview questions should be: first, what will you do with all that money, sit on it or get players to help the Pack win a Super Bowl; second, how do you feel about Gruden as head coach.

vikings won largely because they are a better all around team, bottom line. favre's play, which was really impressive, was probably 3 or 4 on the list of reasons vikes won. o-line: when you can't sustain drives you hurt your offensive AND your defense. running game: o-line aside, the gap between grant and peterson is ridiculous. ryan grant is a tackling dummy on two legs. stupid penalties: self explanatory. special teams: self explanatory.

A-Rodge is a good Qb behind a BAD line. BF wouldnt do any better than what AR is doing. The problem I have with Ted is not the BF scenario. Its what he hasnt been able to do with putting together an Offensive Line. The line looked better in the second half, but still not good enough. TJ Lang looked promising. After all he is a rookie. Im hoping for a 9-7 record. They need to stop the STUPID penalties. the head butt penalty is inexcusable. made a stop and then flush it away with that.

Vikings last 3 1st round picks, 2007-Adrian Peterson, 2008 - pick traded for Jared Allen, 2009 Percy Harvin....Green Bay 2007 Justin Harrell, 2008 - pick traded down to select Jordy Nelson, 2009 - BJ Raji...I'd like to submit this as evidence # 94a in the case the People v. Ted Thompson

The real problem on this team is coaching and that's MM's purview. TT has built a young and talented team at all the most critical positions. I agree that in hindsight, he probably should have sought out a free agent Tackle, but this team is loaded with talent that is not being coached up properly. I'd give MM the boot if this team doesn't "clean-up" and win at least 9 games, and I'd give TT another year regardless.

Brewerfever, you are like most of the boo-happy clueless wonders in Lambeau. Just because we have 22 guys on the roster that Ted picked, DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE IMPACT PLAYERS!!!!!! It simply means he is afraid to do free agency because he can't pick talent, which is why he likes to have lots of draft picks....so he hopes he can find a few to stick around.

U97 you are a clueless youngster. The current Packers team has a tiny bit more talent than when FAVRE TOOK THEM TO THE NFC TITLE GAME. They are still way below where they should be after five years of Ted's idiotic approach, but Favre made him look great, as he does with any team.

Really Bill, after listening to all of your blistering assaults on Favre and your constant love of Thompson, your constant excuse making, your constant buttkissing of the Packers organization, and now what, you're going to write one little blog about the root of the problem? Does that somehow make you an 'objective journalist'? A hard-hitting reporter? It only makes you look more pathetic, more like the big blowhard wind sock that you are... when for years, no criticism at all. Moron.

I don't like Ted Thompson. His decision to not sign free agents have prevented this team from making it to the next level. However, consider this..Thompson started in 2005. We all know how Thompson likes to trade for picks. There has been 5 drafts during his tenure, with 7 rounds per draft. That means the average team has picked 35 times, and at 50% success, the average GM would be happy with 17-18 impact players. The packers have 22. I am more worried about the penalties and playcalling

If you believe that Favre and Favre alone would make this a championship team, you don't know football. Stop it with the Favre worship and look at this team realistically.

The only comment that I have concerning the Favre scenario and the Green Bay Packers is this... If the Packers don't make a playoff appearance,(not that they would go anywhere)then the "3 blind mice"(Thompson,Murphy, and McCarthy are gone! Even with the waffeling that Brett did, he still has enough gas in the tank and a few good years left. Championships are few and far in between. Put the best team out on the field to win! I question the front office's decision making up to now.

Good point about the entire supporting coaching staff taking the wrap from last season. Still stand behind TT's decision to move on with Rodgers, but at this point, McCarthy has had TOO MANY mental lapses and errors of judgment and discipline with his players. You can replace all the assistant coaches you want. But when the same lazy penalties exist, and when players like Jolly are still head-butting people, you might want to consider replacing the Head Coach.

I can't stand comments like that...if Favre came back last year to the Packers, do you REALLY think there would be a difference in the outcome? Even yesterday, insert Favre instead of Rodgers, different outcome? This team has lots of problems...QB is not. Brett is gone...GET OVER IT!!!!

Didn't a entire support coaching staff pay the price at the end of last season? I thought they were headed in the right direction with guys like Capers, but he's proven to be no better than what they've had.

In life you do reap what you sow. I believe in Aaron's ability but I also think the Farve deal hurt the Packers more than you will write about, Brett was key to their sucess and is proving his leadership in other teams. We pay to see Brett not Ted
