Packers vs. Vikings; Mid-Week Report

By Bill Michaels

Story Created: Oct 28, 2009

Story Updated: Oct 28, 2009

First we start off with the more notable absentees from practice:
Jordy Nelson
- Knee
Jermichael Finley - Knee
Korey Hall - Calf
Jason Spitz - Back
Scott Wells - Didn't Participate for personal, "positive" reasons
Derrick Martin - Hamstring
Clay Matthew was at practice but only participated in jog thru and had a bandage on his right cheek
Charles Woodson and Chad Clifton also took part in only the jog thru portion of practice

Workout Notes:
Ahman Green did take some reps out of the backfield earlier at practice.  A few running plays mixed in with a couple of short pass plays.  He looks quick and, as I had said last week, more slender than you're used to seeing him.
Mark Tauscher shared reps with Allen Barbre at right tackle and Evan Dietrich-Smith was at center in place of Wells and Spitz.

After the initial drills, Mike McCarthy took his team outside to Ray Nitschke Field for work under gray, foggy skies and in a temperature of 44 degrees.  After the team's ball-control drills were complete, the special teams drills began.  During a punt coverage drill, Mike McCarthy, in a rare outburst, lit into his team for a couple of minutes about their attention to detail.  Special teams coach, Shawn Slocum, got into Jeremy Kapinos' ear as well yelling at him to get the ball up and angled instead of right down the middle of the field.  McCarthy then made the entire special teams unit start all over again.
For fans who want to know if McCarthy really gets on his players, today I could emphatically say yes.

Defensively speaking, the Packers locker room seems to feel confident that they're headed in the right direction.  Aaron Kampman, Brady Poppinga, Cullen Jenkens even Mike McCarthy believe that Atari Bigby has solidified the secondary and allowed Dom Capers to get a little more creative with blitzes and coverage.  The fact that Bigby was here for the mini camps and training camp, he gets it.  All agree that there hasn't been nearly as many communication errors defensively.
A defensive note:  B.J. Raji told me that he's feeling really good.  The best he's felt since the beginning of training camp.  Raji said that the ankle had been somewhat bothersome and he wasn't able to get the kind of leverage that he needed to be effective.  This past Sunday @ Cleveland, Raji said, "Was the first time that I was really able to feel like my old self."

Offensively speaking, every guy you talk to believes that they shot themselves in the foot the last time the Packers faced the Vikings.  With some of the penalties and injuries, they weren't able to get into a rhythm.  The lineman talk about a concentrated effort to keep Rodgers up right and get some holes to run the ball.  They all agree that Jared Allen is a big problem and he needs special attention but as a whole they're feeling much more confident.  Rodgers also has made a concentrated effort to get the ball away before his 3rd step on his drop back.  Jennings and Driver know that they are going to be more of a focus due to the injuries of Jordy Nelson, Brett Swain and Jermichal Finley.  Both want the ball more and joked, "At least there's more for us."  Donald Lee is looking forward to being more of a posession receiver as well.  Look for Ahman Green out of the backfield a bit in this game as well.

Unit, your stuff is weak. You're a transplant who's trying to make his chops by sniping at a legend who will go down as one of the greatest football players ever. Maybe you can get a show on the Fox News network, where low-class reporting and opinions are exalted as true journalism.

I would have to agree with Long Time Listener, there seems to be people who post here who are complete cowards. Some claim that they can't call because they are "working" yet they post at a time when Bill's show is on, how about calling on a week-end? I think the Big Unit is correct when he called them IDIOTS, he just left out one other thing, they are liars as well.

All I am saying is that Brett did more for GB then any player ever will and I think he deserves respect. Boo the Vikings but not Favre if you want to boo someone how about booing TT he is the biggest moron in the world and you are a close second.

wschm1111- That happens all the time during field goals and extra points. During such plays D-lineman cannot line up direclty across from the center. Nor can they make direct contact with the center. If they do, they are penalized. The Refs tap them or shove them over as a reminder and to save them from receiving a penalty.

Please help me if any of you remember seeing this...I swear I saw an offical physically SHOVE a player out of his way on the Monday night Pack/Vike game right before the snap for a field goal kick, and not one announcer said anything. No re-play, nothing. The ref was in the endzone as was the defending player and they were facing the kicking team. Any chance the player would have had to block the kick was destroyed when the ref shoved him. This was a blantant push, not a little bump....Help Me!!

For anyone not to think that Favre manipulated the NFL is pretty naive. When he was traded to the Jets, he went in with the mindset to play there for a year and retire again hoping the Jets would release him and thus his rights. He was then free to go to Minnesota. He played the Jets like a fiddle and Goodell let it slide because he knew that it would be a huge cash cow for the league.

Hey Hawk Hunter -- MARCH 6th 2008 "I have nothing more to give, I'm retiring" -BRETT FAVRE. HOW IN THE WORLD IS THIS MANAGEMENT'S MANIPULATION?!? Maybe that was a robot with voice over that TT and McCarthy sent up to the podium?!? MOVE ON! Amazing how SHORT sighted some people are and aren't able to see past someone's need for attention and the lime light...(oh by the way, he manipulated the Jets as well!) we all knew when he 'retired' where he was going to be in September!!

I have seen Favre all over the media talking about how bad he felt he was treated by the Packers, ESPN, Leno, SI anyplace and anyone who will listen to him. He's out to get revenge against the Packers. Stick it to Ted Thompson. Nothing was going to get in his way. What have we heard from the Packers...almost nothing, just that they have moved on. So who has taken the high road? It's not the perpetual whiny dive victim, Brett Favre.

I can't believe these comments. That's right Favre couldn't wait to manipulate himself away from a 13-3 team. The only manipulation I see is the packer management spinning this as Favre's fault. Amazing how gullible some people can be.

It's amusing how Favre "fans" seem to have problems with the simple facts and the truth. Tell them that Brett retired and was NOT forced of of Green Bay and you are labeled a "hater". Yet these so called "Packers Fans" want whatever team Favre is on to win. They want Favre to stick it to the Packers and their management. Who owns the Packers? WE do, the real fans. So Favre is sticking it to all of us and not just Ted Thompson.

You cannot be a Favre fan and a Packer fan this weekend...he is now the enemy. He manipulated the NFL to reach his ultimate goal...to play for the Vikings. I am a Green Package season ticket holder and am very happy with Aaron Rodgers as our quarterback. Favre says that his Viking team is better than the '96 Packers? To quote Chad Ocho Cinco..."Child Please".

Andrew, I'm not saying journalists should love Favre. In fact, they shouldn't love him or hate him. After all, that is the definition of objectivity.

I have been a Packer's fan since the 50's. Used to sneak into pre-season games in Milwaukee, went to the Ice Bowl game, etc. I have also been a Brett Favre fan. As I continue to be a staunch Packer fan, I will also continue to be a Favre fan. Both sides acted badly during the divorse. The one thing that really pisses me off during the last two years is having some media yahoo say that you can not be both a Favre and Packer fan. That is the ultimate "steaming pant load".

OK, I'll try to answer a few questions; Brett, before he came back to Lambeau that day, was told that the Packers had moved on. Basically, from what I was told, Brett came back to show up TT. As far as Rodgers calling Favre; Yes, Rodgers has said in numerous interviews that he's called and texted Brett numerous times with no response at all. Those are short answers I know.

Mr. Michael's story yesterday made it sound like Favre gave Aaron Rodgers a dead fish handshake and walked away. Take a look at this picture and judge for yourself. I just wish the sportswriters of WI would exercise at least some objectivity when addressing the Favre situation. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-farmer-nfl28-2009oct28,0,2240826.story

Bill Michaels; I hope that people at the game this Sunday just do not forget the memories and treat Brett with repect. You know, that my mistreating him will only inspire both him and his team mates. (At least I know it would me). The Packers can not afford something like this as they have been making some very untimely misques. MN is a good team and they can not afford these misques against a good team.

Bill Michaels; In listening to you on the radio and have seen you or at least heard you on ESPN, and it seems that you hate Brett. Even in your article dated 10/27/09 it seems that at least you have a heavy dislike for him. Do you think Rodgers tried to call him or was this what someone just told you? I do not totally agree with Brett.Brett is the same age that my son would be today and I believe that I would have advised him of what I believe is the way to handle things.

Bill Michaels; I need to ask you a question, and please do call me an idiot - Family night 2 yrs ago -Brett I believe showed up but not on the field. Any way, I believe that Brett was told he had to compete for the QB position, but then was told he could not step on to the field. If this is true, then why is everyone so upset, if he wants to play, then why not let him be? With MN he has a chance to play for a good team and still contribute to a positive end.
