The Cutler / Favre Comparison....Please!

By Bill Michaels

Brett Favre forever has been called the “Gunslinger”. What exactly that means, I guess it’s open for interpretation. The Webster Handy College Dictionary says, “GUNSLINER” – A gunman. What the heck does that mean? How does that relate to Favre or any other quarterback for that matter?

Brett Favre (Lft) Jay Cutler (Rt)
As is every up and coming NBA phenom compared to Michael Jordan, every brash quarterback with an arm is compared to Favre. Jay Cutler is coming off of a pro-bowl season and a tumultuous off-season. He demanded out of Denver and landed on his glorified feet in Chicago. Bears fans hopes were lifted beyond the clouds. Finally, they have a real leader that’s going to put them into the promise land.

“Cutler is a younger, more brash version of the almighty Brett Favre and I think he’ll be better”, a Chicago radio talk show host proclaimed. When I heard that, I had to write it down. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the ignorance and found it amusing but I still couldn’t believe the stupidity or hopeful blindness, whatever you want to call it.

Drama queen, waffling, retiring, un-retiring, me me me, self absorbed soap opera aside, Brett Favre has been the ultimate competitor. Cutler is nothing like that. To borrow a phrase from the movie Bull Durham, “He’s got a million dollar arm and a fifty cent head”.

If you’ve watched Jay Cutler over the last few weeks you’re getting the real Jay Cutler. A whining, blameless quarterback who doesn’t do the little things to be the leader he’s supposed to be. Brett wasn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, a rah rah guy but he did the little things to make himself better on the field. He worked with his coaches on the sidelines and looked at what went right or wrong on each possession. Favre strategized with his receivers, lived the example of toughness, lived with an inner “never say die” attitude. Cutler, shys away from his teammates on the field, doesn’t work with his coaches, deflects blame as if he’s coated with Teflon. When things go right, Cutler’s right there to smile for the cameras, when things go wrong he’s the first to point the subtle finger in any other direction but towards himself.

Don’t compare Cutler to Favre in any way shape or form. Cutler will never be Favre and he’ll never be the leader on the field that he’s expected to be because if you look deep deep down inside Cutler you’ll find one thing missing, heart.

Hey Big Unit, one question for you. How many points would Denver have scored had Brett not had 3 turnovers which cost the Pack 17 points? I know the D played terrible, but if Brett had not overthrown and underthrown some WIDE OPEN receivers the Pack would have scored more points than just 24. The bottom line is even though the Pack D played poorly, if Brett had played better the Pack would have won SB32.

Please stop with the, "You Haters Garbage." Just because someone does not love Brett or believe he is the greatest QB to live doesn't mean we hate him, we just don't agree with all the people who worship at the shrine called "Farve". Get over it.

Mike in Green Bay. Bradshaw said If Brett had played better the Pack would have won. Denver did not score the winning TD till 2 minutes left in SB32. The Pack had the ball with 4 minutes to go and Brett missed a wideopen Freeman for a 1st down. He didn't lead the Pack to a tying TD with 2 min to go either. Brett could have been the hero, like Starr, Montana, Unitas, but he choked, like he always does in big games. He may have thrown for 2 TD's, his 3 turnovers gave Denver 17 points.

To Mike from Green Bay, you need to get your facts correct, Brett Favre RETIRED and then changed his mind at the last second after the Packers had moved on and made plans without him. Favre was still offered the chance to compete to be the starting QB but he decided to stay retired. He was NOT forced out of Green Bay. If you don't understand the meaning of the word retire, look it up. Favre couldn't get over the fact that the Packers moved on without him and wants to get back at the Packers.

There is been a lot of distortion in the comments sections. I think we need to clear things up. The facts: Superbowl 32: Favre completed 14 of 27 passes for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns. QB rating: 108 Bottom line: Favre played a hell of a game. GB lost the game because the defense could not stop Terrell Davis. To all the haters - 2 people decided Brett's fate in GB. He wanted to stay and play in GB. They did not let him. He moved on. Maybe so should you.

Favre should be Cutler's biggest fan. If Cutler keeps this pace up he'll break Favre's INT record in about 9-10 years--if he isn't run out of town by the Chicago media. Gunslinger = poor decision maker. How many games did Brett give 'er the old heave ho?? There is no comparison though. Brett is a winner...Cutler is a whiner.

Dookie Brett turned the ball over 3 times and cost the Pack 17 points in SB32. He got lucky he didn't get an INT in the E.Z. before half. He missed a wide open Freeman at the 15 y. line when the score was tied 24, Brett was terrible. Manning was considered a choker until the SB win. There are players who have all kinds of records, but can't produce in the big game, Brett & Manning are 2 who usually don't. Brett isn't clutch, Jordan, R. Jackson, B. Starr they knew how to win big games.

"A truly great QB is the one who wins the big games and Brett is a big game choker." So I guess Peyton Manning who is headed for the HOF shouldn't be considered "truly great" QB either, given the number of times he has choked in big games (including in college). His playoff record is a dismal 7-8.

Favre played well in Super Bowl XXXII. Don't be so ignorant. The Defense lost that game, they couldn't stop the run. Favre gave so much to the fans as a Packer. He's gone...get over it and quit hating on him. He was great great Packer.

As as a Pack fan I lost my trust in Brett after SB31 when Desmond was the MVP of the SB. After Brett's poor showing in SB32 and his terrible play in just about everyother playoff game since the SB win I don't understand why people revere Brett. A truly great QB is the one who wins the big games and Brett is a big game choker. The "killer glare in the 4th qtr" you mean the frozen T**d look he had in the NY '07 game or the '03 Philly game. Get over Brett Pack fans he truly is a loser like Culter.

Whining and self centered? That fits Favre to a T. Ask the Jets. Ask the Packers players.

The only real comparison here is between Cutler and Kyle Orton. The Bears and the Broncos swap QBs, and now the Bears are 3-3 and the Broncos are 6-0. If Cutler can't even be as good as Kyle Orton, there is no need to look any higher for another comparison.

Are you new to the NFL? "what the heck does mean?" Gunslinger. You ever see BF with that killer glare in the 4th qtr? you ever see him back down from a hit? you ever see him "sling" a ball downfield? You didn't have to do a head-scratch over "gunslinger" to make your case with Cutler. You are right on with the comparison, though. Now let's kick some Viqueen arse on Sunday.

About the only true comparison of the two is arm strength. But then Ryan Leaf, Dan McGwire and hosts of others had arms just as strong and never made it. Until Cutler wins something, or even has a winning season the comparisons are moot. He's a wanna be great quarterback who puts up numbers, but not wins.
