I’ve always prided myself on calling it as I see it. Yes, your emotions can get caught up in your opinion but that’s what makes us all fans and passionate about the sports and the sports figures that we hold so near and dear to our hearts. That’s why this particular stance, for some of you, will come as a surprise.
I have always, always respected Brett Favre for what he’s done on the field. He’s been one of the greatest competitors I’ve ever watched in my life…not in my career but in my life. I’ve witnessed the hustle of Pete Rose, the never say die attitude of Michael Jordan the greatness and effortless way Joe Montana led his teams to victory, I’m in awe of the greatness and class of Hank Aaron and Bart Starr and I’ve watch Brett Favre, for years, make something out of nothing and will a team to victory.
Then came Monday night’s crack-back block on the Texan’s, Eugene Wilson….
Since that moment in time transpired, I’ve received angry emails and phone calls calling for Favre’s head, screaming how dirty Favre is and how he should be banned from the league. I’ve read blogs and postings describing Favre as a thug who deserves immediate retaliation, I’ve read news articles that call Favre the most antagonizing figure…and now the dirtiest figure in the NFL.
Whooooaaaaahhhhh people!
Brett Favre is a lot of things but he’s not dirty. Brett is the kind of guy who wants to beat you. He’s the guy who wants you to get up, slap his helmet and say, “I’m gonna get you next time”, Brett’s the kind of guy who wants you to hit him just as hard and in the same manner he hits you, then bounces back up, gets in your face and wants to drive the ball right down the field and stick it in your face with a score, a touchdown, a win. He’s NOT the guy who wants and opponent lying on the field in pain because of a cheap shot.
Go back to the heated rivalry between Favre and, then Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Warren Sapp. Favre and he used to jaw at each other the whole game. Sapp would snag Favre, Favre would push and shove back and then they’d appreciate each other’s skills after the game. There was never, NEVER any cheap shoting or debilitating intent on either players part.
Favre isn’t a quarterback who’s in practice every week learning the finer arts of blocking. In fact, most coaches will tell you that they don’t want their QB throwing their shoulder in to anyone for fear that they’ll lead with their natural throwing shoulder and end up injured. Instead, they tell quarterbacks to just throw their body in the way if they do have to lead with a block down field. This is exactly what Favre did, he threw his body at Wilson. Unfortunately, Favre threw his body towards Wilson’s knees and that’s what’s so heinous about this situation. Was Favre diving towards Wilson with malicious intent? NO! He was simply throwing his body out there to free up his running back.
Here’s the definition of a crack-back block for those of you who aren’t really sure what it is we’re talking about; A block by an offensive player who is usually spread out away from the main body of the formation and runs back in toward the ball at the snap, blocking an opponent back toward the original position of the ball. Blocking below the waist or in the back in this situation is illegal.
Favre will be fined, I don’t think that there’s much doubt about that. The fine will depend on his explanation to Commissioner Goodell as to his intentions, his thought process and the genuineness of his remorse. As far as a suspension or running him out of the league…..come on, get real.
Favre’s a lot of things…but he’s not dirty. For those of you who have been irritated by Favre’s recent history and behavior, you’re looking for something to pin on him that simply isn’t there. Get past this.
I,as many others, have watched Favre for years & been honored by his integrity & honesty prior to the antics of the past year or so. What changed isn't clear, but he's blown up any credibility he had in the past. This was
Favre constantly lies. How can you believe a word that he says? Favre knew exactly what he was doing. He always knows. Favre is trying to prove to everyone that the Packers were wrong. He is an idiot.
Packer fans are terrible.40 years I
cheered for them and now I am ashamed to mention I was a fan of the Packers.
Too bad with the block thats happens in games, move on.Favre is the man and get over your fear of what will happen
when he comes to Lambeau. All football
fans watch every play Brett plays for one reason and one reason only HE IS AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE THE MOST EXCITING
PLAYER TO PLAY THE GAME.GO BRETT GO
PACKERS JUST GO AWAY.
This author of this article obviously is a Favre fanboy. Most likely not even a Packer fan to have such a biased opinion. Funny, Favre can never do any wrong in their eyes, just like when he was a Packer, he got all the credit, and when the team did bad, he never got the credit for that. This IS a cheapshot, and you know it is. If he had ended the guys career you still would be defending Favre. Truly pathetic.
Yeah, live in your little fantasy worlds denying everything wrong that Favre does. The guy is even uncapable of telling the truth about anything. If he didn't mean to do this hit, then why did he walk away as if nothing happened? Instead of any normal player who cared, who would run over to see if the guy was ok, and apologize. BS if he didn't do that on purpose, he dove right at his legs.
I agree with those who say Favre is not a dirty player only a bit brain damaged. However after being in the game for so long a veteran should respect other players enough to know better than to pull what Favre did. This was an example of why he lost so many games in the last 10 years that were winnable, he lets his emotions override his mental ability," just trying to make a play."
your right here unit Favre may be very hated in Wisconsin but he is not a dirty player. The truth is that this play should have never happened! What in the world was Childress doing calling this play and putting his 40 year old hall of fame quarterback in this situation? That was a terrible play call and yes Favre should be fined but he is not dirty and I don't feel like he intentionally tried to hurt anybody.
I will agree with Bill that it is not an intentional hit.I do believe a repremind in the way of a fine is apporite!
People who are saying he doesn't know the rules for tackling are wrong! He has played in the NFL long to know the rule!
Had someone one this to him we woul see the play 1000 times a day! There would be no rest until someone was supended!
Hey Ramessees, lighten up. The if the only thing you can find fault with is the omission of 1 "R", and you're going to base your synopsis on that...well then, I assume perfection is within EVERYTHING you do.
I agree with Al. Brad Childress is the worst head coach in the NFL. The Viqueens aren't a QB away from the superbowl, their a head coach away from the superbowl.
Sorry Bill you're wrong on this one. I've seen every game Favre has played and a couple times every year he attempts to make a block. And nearly everytime he throws his entire body at somebody's knees. I know some of these blocks are legal but still it's cheap. What's worse is he becomes glorified by the announcers for it. And as far as his tough guy image, how many times has spouted off to someone knowing there is nothing they can do about it. Favre is a creep.
"Still pretty hilarious to see a 39-year-old man who has been labeled a diva level a guy half his age!"
he only leveled him because it was a blind-side cheap shot. i'm not saying favre does that all the time, but that play he did...
i dont think Favre is a dirty player, but it was a dirty play, regardless. people may be overreacting by saying he should be kicked out of the NFL and such, but it's also overprotective to just say he's a competitor and that makes it ok for illegal plays. by the measure, if pete rose were a pitcher and threw at someones head, would he just be enjoying the game and wanting to win???
Nice! Unbaised, fact-based Favre reporting! Shocking!
I'm certain Brett didn't do it on purpose or mean to hurt the guy. That's really not his style AT ALL. In fact, that's one thing that will get him riled up, when people intentionally try to hurt each other. I've seen him take off after some guy for hammering his receivers illegally. Is Wilson hurt badly? I see it says, he was hurt, but there are NO details whatsoever that I can find. How "hurt" is "hurt"? It felt better 15 min. later?

I dont like the Vikes and still a little peaved at Favre for his drama queen act, but what the heck is Childress thinking sending a 40 YO QB out on a stunt play like that? Oh yeah I forgot he's an idiot.
