With the announcement that Brett Favre had the surgery on his ailing throwing arm it's all but a forgone conclusion that if Brett’s arm heals satisfactory enough for him to play, he will and he will be a Minnesota Viking. There’s going to be a lot of speculation in the coming weeks (approximately 4 to 8 weeks of recovery), as Brett rehabs the arm, but make no mistake about it, Brett would NOT have had the surgical procedure performed if he wasn’t serious about his return to the NFL and going after the Green Bay Packers.
There, that’s the update portion of this article. Now for the emotional reality; I don’t often use listener emails as the basis for my argument unless there’s a really good point to it. In this case, I have to break my own unwritten rule. We adults argue back and forth as to what this or that means to us, the game, the franchise, on and on. But, sometimes, through the eyes of babes, we can see the world a little differently. This email from Carrie, gave me a little different perspective.
Unit,
I thought you'd get a kick out of this story - it was funny, sad, illuminating etc, to me. My 12 year old son was at his first boy-girl birthday party on Saturday night (but that's a story for another time). The theme was "Hollywood" - come dressed as your favorite star, dead or alive. Being the son of 40 something TV rerun junkies, my son went as Fonzie. One of the last kids to come down the red carpet was young man dressed as Brett Favre. With no hesitation or prompting, about 30 12 year olds roundly booed this poor kid. Everybody likes him so it wasn't about that.
For what it's worth, there is the statement from tomorrow's paying public. Lots of name calling, lots of "get outta here, go to Minnesota".
I know all these kids and their parents and a huge majority of them are big time Packer fans - I just found it one of those "out of the mouths of babes" moments.
Have a good one,
Carrie
PS - at least I know that I can trust the word of most of these kids when they tell me something - more than I can say for Brett, unfortunately.
Thanks Carrie!

You people seem to forget that Brett was told he could come back, but couldn't even compete for the starting job. Where else have you EVER heard that in sports? I've never heard of it. I was a true blue packers fan from Hattiesburg, but after the Mike and Ted show, I don't give a hoot whether the packers ever win another game. Brett deserved at least the chance to COMPETE for the starting job. 16 Years without missing a game should give they guy a chance to at least COMPETE for the job.

So you should let one disgruntled player dictate for the team. If Favre is so shallow that he wants to play due to misplaced vengence then fine. Let him go for it. He is just another spoiled player with no class. His supporters do not care about the type of person he is - he could be a mass murderer and they would still want him to play. Shows the type of people who are out there.

It's not that he wanted to play for another team but how he went about it. In my world Brett could do no wrong untill he sat time after time crying his eyes out in front of the world telling every one he had enough and was retiring from Football. Thompson didn't force him out he did his self. Brett always spoke of other Packers who held out or didn't practice with his team but turns around and does the same he complained about former team mates. Brett is one big baby who must get his way.

I never bought him as a role model - never - even got chewed out for that by my own brother. He had to be told to marry his wife - does anyoe remember that? I don't damn him for that, but please, role models don't have to be told to marry the mother of their child.

Mike that was a wonderful comment you hit the nail right on the head. The pack could have at least shown a little class and at least have let him finish his career where he wanted to.

@JTR I'm not a Packer or a Favre fan. I'm a Bears fan. 16 yrs without missing a game should count for more than Ted tragic Thompson. I know what it's like to cheer for a team with a lousy QB. You don't. You also don't know much about NFL history. Joe Montana was the best. He missed 2 yrs and wanted to come back. The 49ers traded him at his request to KC . They didn't release him and he lead them to 4 championships not 3. Get a clue.

Jeff you are completely wrong Favre was forced to leave! I understand that the Packers were tired of him not deciding earlier but after all he has been through I think he deserved a little more respect. Thompson is the biggest moron I have ever seen in my life!! These 12 year old dont even know how fortunate they are that Favre played for the pack because if he didn't no one would care about them, they were nothing until he played for them.

Ya see, I just turned 12 (that was my birthday party Carrie was talking about) and a lot of my friends and I thought we were soooo lucky to have Brett Farve on the Green Bay Packers a couple years ago. We thought that Wisconsin had something that pretty much EVERYONE noticed. Then he became what he is now and we are not only disapointed but we feel bad. Not for ourselves, but instead for him!!!!!!

Sorry Mike but many businesses have non-compete clauses, even when an employee retires. Joe Montana, a much better example of a leader, was let go by SF after winning three Super bowls. It happens, get over it. If you pick to support Favre instead of the Pack that's pretty sad.

The Brett Favre years were extraordinary. His love of the game and youthful enthusiasm were so obvious. Unfortunately, he lost my respect when he played his own game with the Packers two seasons ago. He tarnished his image and hurt his legend. Fame, ego, money, continued attempted retaliation . . . Sorry, Brett, I'm out looking for a new hero.

@Jeff Nice analogy with the job quitting scenario. You're right I wouldn't get my job back. However my former employer wouldn't try to stop me from working for a competitor.

Ease up Madtown I'm not treating Favre like a God. Sure he may be acting like a jerk. He obviously has it in for Ted Thompson. I don't know exactly why. I'm a Bears fan. I don't even like Favre. My point was 16 yrs of service without missing a game should be worth something. I just think he's earned the right to be pissed off.

Madtown you are right on. No former or present Packers or Jets have come to Favre's defense. Moreover some of the Jets have said what a bad teammate he was. He was not liked or respected. When this drama is over the truth will come out and it's not going to be good for Favre. That could be one reason he does't want to retire.

Mike I think that you forgot the 3 or 4 years before he retired, he said that he might retire and waited until the very last minute before he would tell the Packers what he was going to do. So when Favre did finally retire, sign the papers, it was a done deal. The Packers did the only thing they could, move on with a new QB. If you quit your job and your employer hires someone to replace you, do you think you would get it back if you changed your mind? Favre started the whole drama years ago.

If Favre's so highly respected, why didn't more current players speak out to defend him? Why isn't ANYONE on the Packers saying anything other than, "if he wants to come back, let him". THat's IT. No one is saying, "He's still the best" or "Man we miss him", "What a great leader Brett was"....You don't hear any of that. WHY? Because a lot of those guys were tired of him too. That's why!

Stop it. Stop treating Favre as if he's a God. How many times are you supposed to ask Favre to play? 3, 4, 5..what? He wanted the Packers to fawn all over him and he didn't get his way. ALL ALONG he could have simply said, "I'm coming back unless you hear otherwise". PERIOD! He didn't! He RETIRED. It wasn't handleded the best by either side but it was Brett that RETIRED. Don't you listen to Favre? He lies every time he opens his mouth.

@jeff You are ignoring the fact that it was Thompson who started the drama when he told Favre to make a decision. He said "Brett we need to know before the draft" Then Favre retired. Not exactly how you're supposed to treat a legend. We don't know what went on behind closed doors. I do know this. Before all this started Favre always did what was best for the Packers. Thompson on the other hand , has always done what was best for Thompson.

It's all the whining and under-handed scheming he's done to end up with the Vikes. I never thought I'd say I'd never cheer for him. When he plays against us I hope Rogers outplays him and makes him look the old man he has become. What a jerk he turned out to be.

Favre is a bonehead. He lost more games with stupid plays then he won with his incredible talent. The 2007 NFC championship interception is just one example. He has been washed up since 2004. Rodgers with the talent the Packers had in 1990's would have won more games than bonehead Favre. If he plays for the Vikings they will still have the third best quarterback in the division.

People do not like Favre because of his actions. Had he been honest about any of this it may be different. He lied, cried and manipulated. People prefer honesty. That is all Favre got from the Packers despite the accusations of a few. Favre has lost the respect of quite a few people. All because of his own actions.

All that story does is convince me how cruel kids can be and what they have learned from their parents. I don't know why so many Packer fans can't stand Brett. If you don't want him anymore why are you so obsessed with what he does and where he goes>

There is one huge point that people seem to not understand or just completely ignore. Brett Favre was never forced out or asked to leave. HE RETIRED!!! He stood at a podium and cried and said how much he loved the Packers, the fans and said how well they treated him. The Packers took him for his word, moved on like they needed to and should have. Favre then changed his mind at the last minute and that's when this whole drama started. This was a power play from Favre that went bad for him.

Tony, you are not now or have you ever been a Packer fan, no matter what you say. A TRUE Packer fan has been through all the good and bad with their team and that doesn't change because of one player, coach or G.M. What you are is a Favre fan and that's fine, just don't be a liar like him.

If you looked at Brett Farve's production for the last 5 weeks of each of the past two seasons it was pretty easy to see that he did not like cold weather anymore. You could tell from his expressions in the 2007 Bears game and in the 2007 NFC championship game that he was more concerned with being cold then with winning. Was he a great quarterback, yes, but I think his time had past when he could lead a team in a cold weather place like Green Bay.

@Mike A No, Brett is not the only player to leave GB and then go onto do the sorts of things he did. Why people are characterizing this as something peculiar to Green Bay/Wisconsin is beyond me. Surely, if Derek Jeter left the Yankees and went to Boston, surely Yankee fans would no longer much care for him, no?
