Favre's Back, Constanza Was Right

By Bill Michaels

Brett Favre, holding true to his words, “I just want to play”, has now made the Packers worst nightmare a reality.  He’s coming to training camp!

What will happen next is anybody’s guess.  Every time I think that I have this thing figured out, Brett or the Packers do the exact opposite.

     * I never thought Brett would retire….he did.

     * After listening to Brett’s emotional retirement speech, I figured that he’d never come back….he is.

     * I thought the Packers, if Brett did decide to come back, would welcome him back with open arms…..they aren’t.

     * I believed that Brett would have been traded by now....he isn’t.

     * I thought that Brett would take the cash buy out and stay retired….he’s not.

Brett, in retirement, is living life as he did during Part I of his playing career, defying the odds.

I guess if you’re a betting person, you’ll go against my next thought; the Packers will bring Brett into camp but not allow him to practice with the rest of the team.  Thompson and McCarthy will keep Brett somewhat segregated and wait for a deal to be worked out with the Vikings or another team that happens to lose their starting QB after the first or second pre-season game.  If no such suitors take shape then, ultimately, look for Brett to be released outright (which is where we were, and so against, at the beginning of this messy divorce).

A couple of notes regarding Favre’s arrival;  The Packers organization have to really be careful how they treat Brett once he does arrive.  A retired Brett is one thing but as an active player you certainly don’t want to demean an icon, like Favre, in front of his teammates.  That will do nothing for the sincerity of your organization towards its players, not that you have damaged that reputation, almost beyond repair, already.

McCarthy really needs to be a special coach in how he handles Rodgers.  You don’t want Aaron looking over his shoulder with every bad read, pass, interception or minute mistake.  If Rodgers is indeed “your guy” then McCarthy is going to have his hands full convincing Rodgers that there’s an unwavering commitment towards him and his ability to lead this football team.

So when you ask me, “What do you think Brett’s going to do?”, take whatever I say, with a grain of salt and run to the nearest betting window and throw your money down on the opposite.  As George Costanza, in Seinfeld, once said, “I’ll have to completely ignore every urge towards common sense and good judgment I’ve ever had.
