Brett, Why Aren't You Speaking For Yourself?

By Bill Michaels

Should he or shouldn’t he?  Will he or won’t he?  These questions have been plaguing Packers fans and the Packers organization for the last few weeks, months, years as Brett Favre has wavered back and forth between retirement and playing just one more year.

Now, after a tearful goodbye, Brett’s “got the itch”, at least according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun Herald, Bonita Favre (Brett’s mom), Steve Favre (Brett’s brother) and whomever else Brett decides to text message.

Please, let me preface this article by saying that I believe Brett was playing football at a very high level and that he should NOT have retired.  The team was playing well, he was one pass short of a Super Bowl, defensively the Packers will be deeper, offensively Brett would have additional weapons around him and he had the comfort and support of a coach that completely understands him.  Why not come back, right?

In Brett’s words, “I’m not retiring because of Ted (Thompson) or Mike (McCarthy), they’ve done nothing but support me and my family.  I know I can still play, I just feel that I have nothing left to give.” Favre stressed emotionally, “It’s just getting to hard to live up to being Brett Favre.  Sure, I could play on Sunday, it’s Monday through Saturday that’s where games are won and lost and I just don’t feel that I can give that kind of effort anymore.  It just isn’t in me anymore”.

We cried when Brett cried, we smiled when he joked and we harkened back with glee as he remembered the highlights of his career.  It was a classy, emotional retirement from a sure-fire first ballot hall of famer.

Take two

“I’ve got the itch”. Brett expressed to Christ Mortensen.

“Ted Thompson is THE reason that one of the greatest in franchise history, the greatest in franchise history isn’t playing for the Green Bay Packers.”, according to Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun Herald

“Yeah, I believe Brett would still be playing if (Ted) Thompson hadn’t made him feel unwelcome”, proclaimed Bonita Favre.

“He (Brett) felt unwanted”, Scott Favre explained.

…….what, nothing from Brett other than, “I’ve got the itch”.  NOTHING!

This is BRETT FREEKING FAVRE!  His family and friends have thrown Ted Thompson and the Packers organization “under the bus publicly and Brett has NOTHING to say?  Oh wait, Brett’s TEXTED Ted Thompson, “Can we talk?”  TEXTED!

Texting is what my daughters do when the want to chat late at night with their friends or tell me where they are when they’re out on a Friday night.  Texting is NOT what you do when you’re a retired hall of famer either desiring to come back or needing to explain yourself and the words of those around you.

Look, if Brett wants to come back, he’s earned that right. Heck, he gives the Packers the best chance to win in the 08 season.  This is NOT the way to go about it.  For a guy that’s always professed it’s about the “team” he’s certainly acting as if it’s all about Brett Favre.  Did Ted Thompson not beg you to come back?  Did Mike McCarthy not ask nicely enough?  When Ted told you that you’re a grown man with a family and that they’d (the Packers organization) would respect your decision either way….did that not sound sincere enough?  He’s BRETT FREEKING FAVRE!  He could run for GOD in the state of Wisconsin and there would be 45 temples built to Brett with golden idols molded, all wearing #4 and holding pigskins within a week.

If Brett wanted to end all of this right now, he could walk to the end of his driveway, introduce himself to whatever news team happens to be camped out at the Favre compound and simply say, “Hi, I’m Brett Favre and I’d like to come back and play for the Packers” or “I’m Brett Favre and I’m happy  being retired and I’m not coming back” or “I’m Brett Favre and I hate Ted Thompson” or “I’m Brett Favre and I love the Packers and everything else has been rumors and fabrication”......BUT what’s transpired within the last 2 weeks is childlike.

Note to Brett; If you wanna come back, come back.  We’d welcome you.  If you don’t wanna come back, don’t come back and be happy with you’re life, you deserve it.  If you hate Ted or like Ted or whatever issues you have, fine but do us all a favor until you want to come out and speak for the record……..SHUT UP!

Should New York Giant wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, go to jail for carrying a gun into a nightclub?

  • YES, it's the law
  • NO, it's his first offense
