It'll Take More Than CC and Ned; STOP IT

By Bill Michaels

15 to 20 bodies deep outside of the ticket windows at Miller Park , which was the scene after the CC Sabathia announcement was made. Post-season starved fans lined up to get a ticket for tonight’s game. “I want to be one of the first to see this guy”, proclaimed Brad Barclay of Mequon , “He’s gonna be the guy that puts us over the top and I think this is it. We’re finally going to get a chance to play into October.”

That’s the reigning sentimentality that’ singing through the hearts of Brewers fans all over the state this morning.

While the enthusiasm is warranted and justified for now, I’d like to take a step back and caution you not to count your ducats just yet. The Milwaukee Brewers certainly have solidified their pitching staff for the time being but remember their one Ben Sheets injury away from being right back into their pre-trade quandary; does this team have enough pitching to sustain for the rest of the season? In addition, while this team can hit with the best of them, they still rely an awful lot on the long ball. When you get to the post-season, you need to be able to manufacture runs. Bunt, hit and run, steal a base…all of the above. While there are certain guys on the roster that can drop down a bunt or can swipe an extra base, there’s very few that have refined the art of hitting behind the runner or putting wood on the ball when they absolutely HAVE to. The finer points of the game have been lost, at times, on continually relying on the long ball to get you to the promise land.

I’m not here to be the bucket of ice water that’s dousing your spirit, I’m only here to remind you, as Doug Melvin did during his press conference yesterday, "There’s a lot of baseball left to be played and the other guys on the field have to do their part." One guy, playing every fifth day isn’t going to be the sole difference.

By the way, while we’re talking Brewers, is it just me or is Ned Yost at it again and more than ever? Last night, after Seth McClung took the loss in the opener against the Rockies , were you as stunned and appalled to hear Yost say that McClung’s inability to throw strikes wasn’t his fault? That he, “Pitched great”? Are you kidding me??

Look, I’ll be the first to say that Seth McClung has done a solid job and that he’s impressed since being thrust into the starting rotation but Ned, please don’t insult me by saying that McClung pitched great or that it’s not his fault. You sound more ignorant that those that you are condescending to. If the pitcher isn’t throwing strikes, then whose fault is it? The ump may have been squeezing the strike zone but isn’t it the pitchers duty to adjust? With your logic, Billy Hall’s hitting is great, it’s just the ability of the opposing pitchers to execute within the strike zone and trick Billy into subpar performances that, again, aren’t his fault! Ned, Brewers fans aren’t that stupid and you acting as if they are only perpetuates the angst that has built up against you. I normally will give the managers and coaches the benefit of the doubt but I almost fell out of my chair last night when Yost said that.
