A couple of days ago, Eric Gagne admitted that he wasn’t mentally capable of being the Brewers closer. 2 days later, he’s ready to assume that role once again.
“I know I’m a good closer. I have to believe that I’m going to succeed”, Gagne proclaimed.
First you can, then you can’t….for $10 million bucks Doug Melvin certainly wasn’t bargaining for waning indecision. If Gagne decides, after another blown save, that he’s incapable of continuing in the closers role, do you think that he’s going to give any of that $$ back?

Now I know you can’t equate dollars with performance, unless you’re an agent hoping to score the big bucks for your client, but to pay a guy that kind of jack to do a specific job, I certainly expect more than what the Brewers are getting.
If I claim to be the lock-down guy, and expect to be paid accordingly for that specific position, and then come to you after embarrassing work performance and tell you that I can no longer continue in the role that I’m being paid….then I give money back.
It’s one thing to go from first to third or infield to outfield but it’s another to go from just another arm in the pen to being “the guy” that guarantees wins. Gagne certainly wanted to be paid like “the guy”.
If I'm Ned, and I'm not, I'd like to see Mr. Gagne earn his way back into that spot. Ned shouts "accountability"....prove it.
Afterall, it’s not my money, so why do I care so much?
