GB-Carolina: Our Experts Predict

By By Jay Sorgi

Next game: Sunday, November 30th vs. Carolina
Packers Gameday at 9:00 a.m. on Newsradio 620 WTMJ, a live blog here and coverage on Live at 5 and 10 on TODAY'S TMJ4

It's a matchup that harkens back to the "Ice Bowl II," January 12, 1997.

That's when the Packers defeated Carolina to get to Super Bowl XXXI.

This contest, though, has the tables turned.

The Panthers have been a mainly dominant team in this 2008 campaign.

The Packers, meanwhile, have their playoff lives on the line, as they have to win to stay one game behind the winner of Sunday night's Bears-Vikings showdown.

Who'll have what it takes to win in on the first-time-this-year Frozen Tundra?

"Our Experts" will tell you what they think.

Check back here as more of 620WTMJ and TODAY'S TMJ4's Packers experts recover from too much Thanksgiving turkey and chime in with their thoughts on Sunday's game.

Gash the Panthers' run defense.
As proven last week against the Falcons, if you have a special back (like Michael Turner), the Panthers' run defense can be had.  Ryan Grant isn't special, but he's good enough to do some damage.  Also, look for Aaron Rodgers to have a much more efficient performance after three picks last week.  I still shudder to think what Derrick Frost will do outdoors.

Stop their playmakers.
The secondary had better regain its confidence quickly, or Steve Smith will have them screaming for their mommas again.  DeAngelo Williams is a home run hitter.  Jake Delhomme is streaky.  He didn't throw a pick last week, so I'm thinking the Packers get at least one and return it for a score.  Plus, Mike McCarthy was the Saints offensive coordinator when Delhomme was there, so he knows how he tickets.

Green Bay 30, Carolina 17.
The consistently inconsistent Packers do it again.  The Panthers haven't been playing well, barely beating the Raiders and Lions before getting worked by the Falcons.

Repeat after me....
...Ryan Grant, Ryan Grant, Ryan Grant.  If he's stopped, only then will you see Aaron Rodgers airing it out.  The weather's supposed to be sloppy...oh, did I say Ryan Grant?

Get to Delhomme
Can someone, anyone, muster a pass rush?  This is the great unknown.  Watch for some type of creativity out of Defensive Coordinator Bob Sanders.  Then again, it's as always, the falvor of the day....vanilla.  Good luck!

Green Bay 24, Carolina 21.
The Packers need this one more, so they pull it out.

Efficiency out of the pass, productivity out of the run.
The Panthers are not known for giving up a lot in the passing game - just eight touchdown passes thrown against them.  Aaron Rodgers must throw safely and not take chances against Chris Gamble, Ken Lucas and company.  But the Falcons gave Green Bay a heck of a game plan last week - run up the middle, up the middle, up the middle.  Do that, and the passing game might open up.

Stack the middle.
Carolina has a deadly double-team of running backs in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.  Two weeks ago against Detroit, they each ran for more than 100 yards.  It's again time for Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly to own the middle of the line and keep linebackers free to roam and hunt down Stewart and Williams.

Carolina 23, Green Bay 20.
I'm not convinced, on a short week after the drubbing in the Big Easy, that the Packers' confidence is supremely high with a definite NFC contender coming into town and a home field that hasn't been so unfriendly in recent years.

Run the ball.
Get the run game going to keep the Packers' awful defense off hte field, so this one does not have to become a shootout.

Get last Monday out of their system.
Tackle, rush the quarterback, stop the run, and actually play like a professional defense and look nothing like last Monday.

Green Bay 24, Carolina 21.
The season is on the line, and somehow I see the Packers stepping it up and pulling off another surprise win at Lambeau.

Sunday's game
correctly

Driver and Jennings vs. Gamble and Lucas.
Carolina hasn't faced a top-flight receiving corps like the Packers in a good while.  Green Bay hasn't faced a pair of corners like Gamble and Lucas in the same amount of time.  I'm flapping my feathers at this matchup, and anything the Packers get out of this is gravy.  (Wait, did I say gravy?)

Steve Smith vs Al Harris or Charles Woodson.
Since Smith doesn't play in media circuses like Dallas or New England, Smith's forced to avoid the limelight like I avoided the Thanksgiving hatchet, and people don't realize this guy may be the best wide receiver in the NFL.  Harris and/or Woodson have to win that one-on-one battle.

Green Bay 27, Carolina 23.
Please, Wayne Larrivee, don't put the dagger on me!!!
