With the amount of injuries the Packers have suffered in the past couple of week, including one to its starting quarterback and another to perhaps its best defender so far in 2008, Head Coach Mike McCarthy may as well have tried to stick on a doctor's stethoscope and become titled Dr. Mike McCarthy, MD.

Instead, since he doesn't pretend to try and play a doctor on the football field, his job has been to try and heal the Packers' on-field performance that has suffered two straight losses coming into Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Coach Mike McCarthy on 620WTMJ's Wisconsin's Morning News

"We're definitely going through a tough patch with the health of our football team," said McCarthy on Newsradio 620 WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."

"You can only control what you control. I can't control the health of our team. I can control the practice structure, the emphasis, that we need to work on. The fundamentals that have lacked here the last two weeks was the emphasis this week. I'm very please with the quality of work we got done in Wednesday's and Thursday's practice.

"That's the way it goes in our business. It's definitely part of the game. I think our players have done a good job dealing with it in regards to the guys that are injured, spending extra time in the training room, trying to get better, and the rest of our football team is working to improve as we get ready for Atlanta."

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has tried to get ready to play in case his sprained right shoulder heals enough for him to throw effectively on Sunday.

"He's trying to get as much strength back in his shoulder, the stabilization of everything there," explained McCarthy. "The rehab that's he's gone through the last two days has been extensive. We'll see if he can throw today in practice."

If he can't throw in the game on Sunday, rookie Matt Flynn will take over the starting role against the Falcons.

Normally, backup quarterbacks, especially rookies, get a much less complicated game plan to use when they have to fill in as a starter. In the case of this week, though, McCarthy has inserted, to use his analogy, a smaller choice of lunch options for either quarterback.

"When we put the thing together on Tuesday, it's a lot like a menu," said McCarthy.

"You try to keep your volume at a certain point, week in, week out. We want it a little lower than normal, just for the fact that Aaron, if he did play, was not going to be able to practice.

"If Matt does play, we didn't want to make him get ready for everything. We've kind of balanced that out with the fact of how we game plan on Tuesday."

One thing he realized he could not include in his game plan is Cullen Jenkins.

The Packers' defensive lineman, who had 2.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, a forced fumble and 18 tackles to start the 2008 campaign, is out for the season with a chest injury.

"You don't go out and just replace Cullen Jenkins," says McCarthy. "He's one of the best football players on our team.

"It's a collective effort of the people that come in to take responsibility, playing whatever phase of the defense that is. That's what it's about, being a team. We feel that our depth gives us the opportunity to do that."
