This time around, the atmosphere won't be as friendly on the Bayou. "It will be an incredible environment, Monday Night Football, at the Superdome," said Packers Coach Mike McCarthy on 620WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."
"It's very similar to the Metrodome, and frankly it may even be louder because it is a bigger dome." But just as volume levels will be up for the game because of the place where the game's being played, players' intensity levels will be just as raised because of the day and time the game comes - Monday night, when fellow NFL players tend to make it a point to watch their friends and competitors perform. "Everybody likes to play on Monday night," explains McCarthy. "It's an opportunity to play in front of your peers. I don't think there will be a player on that field that isn't excited about the opportunity." But the Monday night before a Thanksgiving, a situation that also makes preparation for the next week more unusual, becomes unsettling for a coach. "It's a challenge, particularly when both the Monday night games we play are on the road, and a major holiday follows," explains McCarthy, who will deal with the same thing on Dec. 22 for the Chicago Bears on Monday night, three nights before Christmas. "Those are the things when the schedule comes up, you just kind of scratch your head. Those are extra challenges you work through as a football team." McNabb's Tie Game The Talk of Packers' Locker Room All week long, the Packers have discussed the fact that another team played a tie game Sunday without some of its players knowing the game could end in a tie. The Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals ended at 13-13, and afterward, Donovan McNabb admitted that before the overtime period began, he had no clue a game could end deadlocked after 75 minutes of football. Did McCarthy's players know that rule before this week? "If they didn't, I think they definitely know now," states McCarthy. "It's a hot topic. We addressed it as a team." McCarthy felt for McNabb after he admitted to not knowing the overtime rule. "It's a catch-22. Everybody wants you to be open and honest when you speak with the media. That's exactly what he did, and unfortunately he's paying the price for it." McCarthy's New Daughter Hasn't Seen His Team Live While McCarthy prepares week after week for his team's games, his team at home - with newest member Gabrielle, his one-month-old daughter - is steering clear of the frozen tundra. Did she go to any home games yet? "No, she didn't," laughed McCarthy at the question the 620WTMJ staff posed, one a number of people seem to be posing at the coach. "You're about the fifth person that's asked me this week if she's gone to a game!" Right now, the current scripted play for Gabrielle is to enjoy evening slumber, so her proud parents can do the same. "She slept through the night last night. Those are the kind of victories we're looking for." |
