Melvin Preparing Big-Bucks Deal for Sabathia

By By Jay Sorgi

The Brewers have completed their first of two blockbuster moves for the 2008-09 offseason, hiring Ken Macha to manage the team.

Is keeping starting pitcher CC Sabathia next?

As new manager Ken Macha said on Newsradio 620 WTMJ's "Greenhouse," Melvin is preparing an offer to Sabathia that likely will turn into a four-year, $100,000,000 attempt to keep him in Brewers blue and gold.

"We knew when we acquired him, the chances of keeping him were slim, but he enjoyed it here, and because of that, we feel we have at least that opportunity," said Brewers general manager Doug Melvin.

Sabathia, who will certainly test the free agent waters, is expected to field offers from multiple teams that could match or exceed that per-year amount.

He had an 11-2 regular season record with a 1.65 ERA in 2008 with Milwaukee.

Milwaukee owns exclusive rights to negotiate with Sabathia until November 13th, when Major League Baseball grants him the right to negotiate with any team he wants.

Other teams can talk with his agent, Greg Ginske, but cannot make an offer to him until then.

In the meantime, often-injured Brewers "co-ace" Ben Sheets has filed for free agency.
