C.C. Sabathia. | Photo: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Brewers To Acquire C.C. SabathiaBy Todd WelterNote: The Brewers have scheduled an 11:00 a.m. press conference today with General Manager Doug Melvin. The Brewers are giving up a big piece of its future in hopes of winning big in its present. Tom Hardicourt of the Journal Sentinel and Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Brewers 360 is reporting, and 620WTMJ/Today's TMJ4's Lance Allan is confirming, that the Brewers and the Cleveland Indians have finalized a deal that will send 2007's AL Cy Young Award Winner, C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee in exchange for top prospect Matt LaPorta. All that is left is some paperwork to be filled out, medical records to be exchanged and Sabathia should be on the mound this Tuesday at Miller Park against the Colorado Rockies. The Journal Sentinel is reporting that along with LaPorta, the Crew will send minor-league pitchers Zack Jackson and Rob Bryson and possibly third base prospect Taylor Green in the deal. Green was the organization's Minor League Player of the Year last season. Sabathia gives the Brewers quite possibly the best one-two pitching punch in the league as he gets paired up with All-Star Ben Sheets. He gives the Brewers a dominate left handed arm as well. Sabathia is currently 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA and 123 strikeouts and just 34 walks. He has been especially dominate recently with two shutouts and 1.89 ERA in the month of June. His record is down from last year's Cy Young Award season largely due to a lack of run support. The Indians scored less than two runs in 11 of his 18 starts this season. Sabathia won the Cy Young last season with a 19-7 record and a 3.21 ERA. Sabathia will be a free agent after this season and turned down Cleveland's four-year, 72 million dollar extension before the season started. The Brewers do give up its top prospect in Matt LaPorta who was hitting .288 with 20 homers and 66 RBI at Double-A Huntsville. He was pulled from the lineup in Huntsville's game as the trade was getting near completion. LaPorta was the Brewers first round pick in 2006 out of Florida. The L.A. Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Tampa Bay Rays were all believed to be in the mix to land Sabathia as well but the Brewers deep farm system provided the prospects the Indians were looking for. |
