New Audio: Post-pick Audio: More: Bucks GM John Hammond made his first pick ever as Milwaukee's general manager and he got the guy he wanted all along. He went with one of the most athletic players in the draft in West Virginia's Joe Alexander. "He's arguably one of the best athletes in this draft," Hammond explained. "He plays extremely hard. He loves the game. He wants to get better and I think he'll do anything it takes to get better." Click here to hear more about what Hammond had to say about Alexander. "I think its pretty accurate," Alexander said on being one of the most athletic players in the draft. "My numbers at the combine were well above what a 6'8" player should be performing at." It will be interesting how Alexander will fit into coach Scott Skiles's rotation as Alexander plays the same position as the recently acquired Richard Jefferson. The Bucks also have veterans Desmond Mason and Charlie Villanueva who can also man that position. Hammond felt Alexander's versatility can solve that logjam as Hammond believes Alexander can play power forward at the NBA level. "That's basically what he's been his entire career in West Virginia, he can play the power forward position," Hammond explained. Many mock drafts and experts believed Alexander was going to be the Bucks' pick before the Jefferson trade. It looks like Hammond stuck with that plan even though he pulled off an earlier trade that sent Bobby Simmons and Yi Jianlian to the Nets for All-Star forward Jefferson. "He was the guy we've been coveting for a few days," Hammond said. "We liked him an awful lot." "We wanted to address energy, athleticism, and toughness," Coach Skiles said. "We feel like we really became a lot more athletic between Jefferson and Joe." Click here to hear more about what Skiles had to say about the draft. Alexander is 6'8", 220 lbs. He averaged 16.9 points per game and 6.4 rebounds in his junior season at West Virginia. He is known for his athleticism, toughness, and his aggressiveness on the defensive end. Alexander led West Virginia to the Sweet 16 in this year's NCAA Tournament. He was named First Team All-Big East for his outstanding junior campaign and also was a Honorable Mention for the All-American team. "He's tough, athletic, and he's got a mindset that whatever his ceiling is, he's gonna reach it," Skiles explained "My long term goals are to blossom into a small forward and also a versatile defender," Alexander said about his potential NBA career. The Bucks took another small forward with its second round pick. The focus again was on another player known for his defense and that can fit into Head Coach Scott Skiles's system. UCLA junior Luc Richard Mbah a Moute was selected by the Bucks with the 37th pick. Mbah a Moute is a 6'8", 221lb forward who averaged 8.8 points per game and 6 rebounds in his junior year. His stats might not be flashy but he was rated as one of the best defenders in the draft and he does come for a winning pedigree as he played on all three of UCLA's recent Final Four teams. "I feel we walked away from this draft a better team," Hammond said after completion of his first draft.
