Former Packer, Fox Sports Broadcaster Bill Maas Released After Arrest

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- A one-time NFL player and former Fox Sports broadcaster Bill Maas was released from jail Sunday after being arrested on drug possession and weapons charges during a roadside safety check.

Maas, 45, and passenger, Sarah J. Murphy, 27, were released and ordered to return to court August 21, jail officials said Sunday.

The two were arrested Friday night by Illinois State Police after authorities stopped Maas' Hummer along Illinois Route 116 . They asked to search the vehicle after Maas appeared nervous, officials said.

The search uncovered a .22-caliber revolver, five grams of suspected marijuana, six grams of suspected cocaine and 28 pills of Ecstasy, police said.

Maas was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon. Murphy was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, jail officials said.

The two are residents of Lee's Summit, Mo.

Maas was drafted out of the University of Pittsburgh by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1984 and became a two-time National Football League All-Pro selection. He played with the Chiefs until 1992 and with the Green Bay Packers the following year.

He joined Fox in 1996 and worked for the network as a reporter, anchor and game analyst through last season.
