On a day where Eric Gagné was out as the Brewers closer, it took two pitchers for the Brewers to finish out a win against the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.  Salomon Torres and Brian Shouse pitched the ninth inning to finish out a 5-3 victory for the Brewers.  Shouse picked up the save as he got Adam Kennedy to ground out to end the game.

"I feel good about every reliever I have down there," said Brewers manager Ned Yost.

A number of Brewer hitters enjoyed using pink bats on Mother's Day.  Ryan Braun hit two solo homers for the Brewers, his sixth and seventh of the season.  J.J. Hardy picked up three hits including two doubles to raise his season average to .260.  Corey Hart went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI double. The pink bat tradition started in 2006 to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation which  helps fight breast cancer.  The bats are auctioned off after they used on Mother's Day.  Braun, Hardy and Hart all said after the game  they wanted to keep using the pink bats.

"I think I want to keep those pink ones and paint them black," Hardy said.

Two years ago, Bill Hall hit a walk-off homer against the Mets at Miller Park with a pink bat.

"Could be a coincidence," Hardy said about the success with the pink bats.  "Maybe it's just better wood.  I don't know."

Eight of the Brewers nine hits came with a pink bat.

"I think we are going to see if we can use those tomorrow," Hart said. "It's been a rough stretch for us.  The pink bats worked today so maybe we can see if we can get them going."

Brewers starter Jeff Suppan pitched a solid seven innings as he gave up just one run and struck out four while walking five.  All five walks by Suppan came in the first three innings of the game.  Suppan is the first Brewers starting pitcher other than Ben Sheets to get a win since April 5 when Manny Parra got the win against the Giants.

"He never gave in," Yost said about Suppan's performance.  "Got us through seven innings with the lead.  He pitched great."

Braden Looper started the game for the Cardinals and was charged with his second loss of the season.  Looper logged six innings and gave up four runs, all earned.  Ryan Ludwick hit his eighth homer of the season in the seventh inning to pull St. Louis within two runs at 4-2.  Chris Duncan and Troy Glaus each had two hits for the Cardinals.

For the first time in the series, the Brewers scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Prince Fielder had a sacrifice fly that scored Rickie Weeks and Hart doubled home Tony Gwynn.  The Brewers would have the lead for the rest of the game.

The Brewers finish the four-game series against the Cardinals on Monday.  Right-hander Dave Bush (0-4, 6.98) will take the mound for the Brewers and righty Adam Wainwright (3-1, 2.25) will be on the bump for St. Louis.

Notes: Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo will undergo surgery on Tuesday morning to repair the torn ACL in his right knee.

Albert Pujols had a single and two walks and now has reached base safely in all 39 Cardinal games this season.  Pujols also made three outs on the base paths during the game.  He got picked off first base, thrown out at third base on a base hit by Duncan and was doubled off second base to end the sixth inning.
