The Next Wisconsin Sports Icon: Ryan Braun or Aaron Rodgers

By Todd Welter

Brett Favre is officially a Viking meaning he is officially a traitor. 16 years of worshipping out the window all in the name of spite. He went from being consider part of the family for every Packer fan to hoping he gets run over by tractor. If there is one thing about this state, it is this state loves it heroes. Now that Favre is the villain, who is the next athlete this state will love like their first born? It comes down to Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Braun.

Prince Fielder is just a few years away from being a Yankee. A.J. Hawk looks like he is going to turn out to be a solid linebacker but not Ray Nitschke. Andrew Bogut plays for the Bucks and that is all that needs to be said right there.

So that is why it comes down to Rodgers and Braun. Both are young, supremely talented and intend to stick around these parts for a good chunk of time to earn the love and admiration of this state.

Of those two, who will emerge as the beloved of this state? The one that can do no wrong and earn a rumor has it could walk on water. That was the type of love this state showered upon the now starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings.

The smart money is on Rodgers. He does happen to be the freaking starting quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. At the same time, this state is starting to grow very fond of the Brewers so Braun has a better shot then one might think.

Braun has the personality people can rally around. He is confident, cocky but not arrogant enough to rub people completely the wrong way. He hits home runs, tells it like it is and actually enjoys his summers here. Enough to commit a year beyond the first chance he will get a free agency. He has the talent and personality to capture this state’s hearts like Paul Molitor and Robin Yount once did. Plus, he has actually helped rally his team from behind a few times.

Still, he does not wear green and gold. That is why Rodgers will always have a leg up on him. Plus, Rodgers actually sticks around this state pretty much year round where Braun is back in L.A. the moment the season is done. Rodgers is just humble enough to win over the mature and young audiences alike where Braun probably appeals more to the younger crowd.

The only thing standing in Rodgers' way is the bucket list of accomplishments he has to achieve where Braun just needs to win say a World Series. Rodgers has to pull off a comeback victory, beat Brett Favre twice this season, win a division, a playoff game and a Super Bowl before even the most hardened of Favre zealots will shower Rodgers with the love they give Favre. Even if he only crosses off a comeback win off his list, he probably still has a leg up on Braun. Being the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers has a way of carrying more clout in this state than hitting in the three hole for the Milwaukee Brewers.
