Charlie's Bigger Twitter Twist

By Todd Welter

You would have hoped Charlie Villanueva would have made better NBA history than being the first player to tweet during a game. Say like go off for 101 points, win a NBA championship, score in the post. Nope, he tweets. Or is it twittering? All I know is Tweeter Bird should be trying to get a copyright on the tweet lingo.

Whether it was a simple lapse in sound judgment, Villanueva's tweet brings a big gray elephant in the corner of the room. Questioning Skiles policy of keep your Twitter account out of the locker room makes the elephant roar is Villanueva going to be worth keeping around even louder. Villanueva's talents are unquestioned. He scores with the best of them and stretches out defenses that makes guys like Ramon Sessions and Richard Jefferson better. He gets along with everyone in the locker room and you will not be seeing him on a police blotter. He has yet to realize his full potential. The brings up the elephant. Is he going to be worth the big money he could possibly get this offseason? I say possibly because being a restricted free agent in this economy and with the 2010 offseason bonanza, teams may not fork over the serious cash that Villanueva seeks.

While he can score in bunches, he does not go the rim or play like the big man that he should be. He should be in an inside-outside threat. Instead, he is usually content for the jumper and the occasional take to the hole. Let's not get started on his defense. All of a sudden you got him tweeting things like what is the difference between tweeting and halftime interviews? It is small sign of defiance/protest but in the sports world that type of defiance/protest can snowball into bigger sagas. Remember, the Brett Favre circus was started over a small perceived slight.

Talking with some other people that cover the Bucks, the belief is general manager John Hammond will practice some financial restraint in the offseason. Villanueva's tweet probably is not going to improve his cause in getting Hammond to think he should match whatever riches Charlie V gets in the open market. Who could blame Hammond? With a guy like Villanueva, the common logic points that once he gets the money, he pretty much plateaus off ala Tim Thomas, Keith Van Horn and Troy Murphy.

Then again, he could blossom into Dirk Nowitzki and can this franchise handle passing on a talent like that twice? That is the issue beyond an innocent tweet.
