Shine the Spotlight Someplace ElseBy Todd WelterI finally recovered from both the Brewers and my beloved White Sox being bounced from the playoffs. How three teams within a 90 mile stretch of I-94 not advance to the championship series is beyond me. Hey, at least the Cubs looked pathetic. I mean 100 years of losing pathetic.
So now that the Wisconsin sports world slowly wakes up and realizes you can no longer pay attention to the Brewers (well, maybe the hot stove season), the spotlight now shines solely on the Packers, Badgers, and Bucks. Yikes! The way all three teams are playing you might as well just watch the calendar until the Brewers 2008 Season DVD comes out.
The Packers offensive line can not stop traffic with the help of a stop light let alone a defensive front four. The same can be said for the D-line. Rumor has it, Aaron Rodgers is thinking about calling out Our Fathers and Hail Mary's instead of the snap count on Sunday. Every game it seems Rodgers is running for his life. We knew he was mobile but this is just getting ridiculous with how he has to run for his life. Although, he might be the best running back this team has. By the way, if anybody finds Ryan Grant, tell him to show up at Lambeu Field. He's got about 30 million paychecks to cash but the catch is he needs to earn it. Sure, he has battled the bad hammy and that can hamper a runner but not to the point that he joins Nick Barnett on the missing persons list.
Allan Everidge continues to pretend to be a quarterback for UW. The smoke and mirrors can work against Marshall. Does not work out so well against say Ohio State. I do not know which is more embarrassing: Everidge or the UW band. Although the Big 10 might be worse than both. The more I watch the Big 10, the more I cringe. This conference just looks bad. Three yards and a cloud of dust bad. You watch the Big 12 or the SEC and guys are flying all over the field making big plays and big hits. The Big 10 is a running back to the right, to the left, up the middle, and punt. Score points off some fumbles and thank the higher power that the Big East is still involved with the BCS.
Then there is the Bucks. Sort of makes you want to ask how many days until pitchers and catchers report? Thankfully, this is still the preseason. This is a team that is certainly working out the kinks. At least there is no talk of the playoffs coming out of the Cousins Center. There will be bumps in the road in the early goings but the Bucks still should be ten wins better. That will be light years improvement over last year's debacle. It is still going to be ugly to watch early. Although better to have it be ugly early than late like the last couple of seasons. This is not saying much so I say why not turn the spotlight somewhere else. Like on the countdown until spring training starts. |
