So Who Won?

By Todd Welter

The only question left to be said in the resolution of the Favre stand off is who came out the winner?  Sure we want to know if Brett can play at the level he did last season.  I think everyone is intrigued what day Mike McCarthy will name him the starter.  Whenever you have disputes of this magnitude, it is just human nature to want to know who won the battle.

The Winners

1)  Brett Favre

The man got his wish.  While he had to comprise just a little bit, he ended up getting the chance to play football again.  Plus, he gets the knowledge that he is still the man that holds the fate of the franchise no matter how long it takes for him to make up his mind.

2)  The Favre Family

They get to remain celebrities and relevant in this state.

3)  Al Jones

The man looks like a prophet for predicting this stuff on 620WTMJ.  He may just look like another mouth piece for Brett.  Either way, the man was right when he said Ted Thompson was a major reason Brett thought about leaving the game.

4)  Aaron Rodgers

Sure, he has to compete for his job but also the weight of Wisconsin is off his shoulders.  If Brett never created this mess, Rodgers would still have the weight of the cheese state on him, but at least he would have had a grace period.  The doomsday scenario of Brett leaving to play for another team would have placed more pressure than 40,000 fire-hoses going off at the same time on Rodgers's right arm.  He would have been perceived as the man that was deemed better than Brett.  Every pass, every win would have to be better than Brett Favre.  Would anybody want that pressure?

5)  The NFL

The Pack were already slated for prime time games and now Roger Goodell gets Brett Favre to play in them.  Did anybody say ratings bonanza?

6)  John Madden

His man crush and crusade to make Favre a verb gets to live on for another year.  Fans just better hope the Madden curse does not strike.  Although Madden's love for #4 might be able to overpower any bad mojo.

The Losers

1) Ted Thompson

Boy, did he end up looking bad.  Lets see he pretty much revealed he did not want Brett around and that for some reason he thought Aaron Rodgers was the best chance to win despite Brett's season last year, and he lost the pot in this little poker game that was played.  Luckily, he was smart enough to not go all in, but as they say in the World Series of Poker, his chip count took a serious hit and so did his reputation.

2)  Favre's legacy

Turns out some do not blindly follow Favre.  Favre did take a small beating in the court of public opinion.  He looked like a spoiled brat at times and a man trying to control a franchise.  Nobody does comebacks like Brett so at least he saved some face by agreeing to compete for the starting job.

3)  Mark Murphy

It looked like he had no control over this situation.  First, he made it sound like his visit with Brett was less about business and more about exchanging fishing tips and brownie recipes.  Then he thought Brett was a Chicago politician by trying to buy him off.  Although it seems Murphy overlooked one thing.   Brett could make 38 million dollars by playing for three years compared to earning 25 million dollars over ten.  Wonder what he was going to choose.  Do you also think Brett will be in a desperate need of cash seven years from now?

4)  Mike McCarthy

In fairness to McCarthy, the man did try to talk Brett out of retirement a ton of times.  Still, the guy now has to deal with daily Favre questions.  He also has to keep the locker room from dividing in two.  Let's not forget, he basically has to become a ringmaster during this quarterback controversy circus.
