When Did It Get This Bad?

By Todd Welter

Wasn't it just a few weeks ago Wisconsin sports held the attention of the entire country?  The Crew were on fire and the Brett Favre saga was just a soap opera.  Now, the Crew not only just got swept by the Cubbies, they were embarrassed.  They played absolutely awful.  The Brewers allowed Miller Park to literally become Wrigley North (complete with the ivy in the outfield).  The Brett Favre saga has gone from a cheesy episode of Days of Our Lives to a Greek tragedy.  Packers management is bumbling through this crisis worse than Colonel Klink managing a Diary Queen.

How did it get this bad?  Well, in the Brewers case they just flat out chocked.  Hitting under .060 with runners in scoring position over nine games is proof enough.  Exhibit B is scoring just 11 runs in four games while your opponent scores over 30.  Salomon Torres could not keep game one at even which ultimately gave the Cubs the momentum of the series.  Ben Sheets, Manny Parra, and Dave Bush all imploded and the rest is history, sort of like being a game back as of last Sunday.  The series almost brought back memories of the Boston Massacre series.  The only difference is the Crew actually rolled over and died in this one.  Sure, they scored runs in the ninth in three of the four games but that was more avoiding getting shutout then trying to rally back.  Plus, the Crew scored those runs on relievers.  Maybe this series will have the same effect as the Boston series and the Crew's offense can snap out of this funk.  The funk cost the Crew precious time and wasted the last two weeks.

The Packers well, they are beyond a laughing stock.  You would have to invent a word for what they are doing. If you are so desperate to keep Favre away that you have to bribe the man, then just release him.  If you are so committed to Rodgers, who cares where Brett goes.  If you believe Rodgers gives you the best chance to win (which is a laughable idea on its own), then you should believe he can beat Brett twice if he signs with the Vikings.  Here's an idea, drop the notion of getting a first round pick and take whatever you can get for him.  Second round pick, third round pick, a bag of footballs, just get rid of him and stop this madness!  This has been a cross between comical and downright sad.  The solution is right in front of everybody's face yet Ted Thompson is too stubborn to do it.  Make it an open competition!  You worried about the PR downfall or looking like one player runs your team?  I got your solution:  Hide under the whole we go with the player that gives us the best chance to win slogan.  That's right just say we believe we have two quarterbacks that gives us a great chance to win and while one gives us the best chance in the short term, we also want to give the long term guy a shot too, so we shall decided on the field.  That is what the fans are asking for and I'm sure that is what the players can buy into.  Especially since Brett does need to prove he is 100% committed and the only way to do that is to win your job back.  Leave no room in anybody's mind that he still does not want it.  Instead, the Packers are acting like a parent bribing their kid with a chance to get a new car if they get straight A's.

Wisconsin sports went from being the toast of the sports world town to the butt of its jokes and we still have not gotten to Bucks season yet.
