Odds of it Ending

By Todd Welter

My landlord/roommate/Sports Central guest host, Greg Matzek asked how will this Favre saga end.  This lover's quarrel is resembling last Monday's Days of Our Lives episode (not that I would know how that episode went but I'm sure somebody's evil twin brother was causing trouble like Favre and Thompson).  While there is a bunch of scenarios to how this ugliness will end, nobody has sized up the odds of how the numerous scenarios will play out?

Brett comes back and immediately gets named the starter and everyone is happy:

We know that is what Brett wants.  We know deep down every Packer fan wants that.  It is the scenario that Ted Thompson would probably want to be thrown off a building before letting that happen.

Odds:  In between the chances of winning the lottery but just below getting attacked by a shark.  Okay odds might be to high.  Lets lower it to winning five scratch offs in a row.

Brett comes back as the back up, puts on the ball cap, and holds a clipboard for 12 million bucks.

We know Ted Thompson would love that.  We know Brett would rather be thrown off a building before that happens.  We know that would put Aaron Rodgers in even a tougher spot.  Could you imagine the first incomplete pass Rodgers throws with Brett sitting on the sideline?  I'm sure no one in the stadium would not be calling for Favre to be under center.  If you believe that statement, I got some bridges to sell you.

Odds:  On par with Tiger Woods playing the British Open this year.

Brett gets released like he asked for and goes play for the Vikings.

Any bridge in Wisconsin better be shut down for weeks if that plays out.

Odds:  Equal to a black hole opening up and sucking in the moon because the Packers will never let that happen.

Aaron Rodgers bows out and says Brett can take my starting job.

It is probably the only way this actually can get resolved with everybody saving face.  Aaron Rodgers has a waited a lifetime for this chance.  He has been anointed to step out from Brett's shadow.  Not many quarterbacks can claim that distinction.  He has spent an off-season working on becoming the leader of this team.  He has done everything a quarterback does to take over a team:  having the team over for dinner, staying late to practice throws with the receivers.  So do you think that Rodgers will be up for stepping aside so Brett could play one more year?  Don't be surprised if Rodgers takes a page out of Brett's book and asks for a trade before stepping aside.

Odds:  About the same odds Matt Flynn gets named the starter out of training camp.

Ted Thompson gets fired for this.

A lot of fans would love to see this play out.  I'm sure Brett would crack a smile if Thompson gets his pink slip.  Be warned, wanting Brett out the door is not just a viewpoint of Ted Thompson.  Some board members wanted this to play out since that dreaded Eagles' playoff game.

Odds:  You got better odds of Mike Sherman getting rehired than Thompson getting canned over this.

Brett sticks it to Thompson, shows up for camp, and beats out Aaron Rodgers for the job on the first pass in camp.

Another way to resolve this with both parties saving face.  Brett comes out looking better than ever while Thompson looks bad.  He still gets to say he gave Brett a chance.   Why not come back and stick it to Thompson?  Isn't Brett the guy that loves challenges?  Isn't he the guy that once threw 5 TD's on a severely sprained ankle?  Isn't this the legend that played the best game of his life a day after his father passed away?  This challenge should be a walk in the park.  Then again, with all the challenges #4 has overcome, why does he have to prove himself all over again?

Odds:  Like hitting a blackjack three times in a row.  Then again, this is Brett Favre and you never know what he will do.  Set the odds at hitting a blackjack in a hour.

Brett decides to stay retired and this mess all goes away.

This is really the only that this can truly get resolved and the Packers save face.  Brett does get screwed in the end and it really is not fair to him.  Brett sort of gets to save face as well because his legacy does not take too much of a ding.  The Packer Nation does not have to be tortured watching Brett whiz touchdown passes in a Vikings' uniform.  Brett can retire sort of like Barry Sanders.  Meaning, Brett remains always a Packer but it also means do not expect him to be involved with the franchise.

Odds:  I say even money.  You look into his eyes during his Fox News interview and he still sort of had the look of a torn man.  It is hard to buy into him being 100% committed.  If there is one thing that is true about Brett, he won't play unless he is 100% committed.  Too many times in that interview, he said I might not still come back.  That does not sound like a man who is a 100% committed to come back.  Sounds more like a man that is 100% committed at sticking it to Ted Thompson.  Who can blame him?
