Andy Pettitte has asked that we look at why he did HGH for two days of his life and accept his apology. Well, I know Andy Pettite has no clue that I exist, but I will say I accept his apology. Whether, you believe him that he only did HGH twice, is up to you. Accept the apology and let’s move on. He didn’t hide from the accusations, he didn’t pull a Barry Bonds and throw a fit like a two year old, and he didn’t stay quiet like the 600 players that wouldn’t rather have a conversation with a hungry bear than George Mitchell. He simply admitted he made a mistake and he apologized. To me, I take Pettite off the tarnished list. He isn’t running from anything. Did he stay quiet before the Mitchell Report? Sure, but what makes a person is how the respond to challenge and controversy. Pettitte handled it the way a man who has won over 200 games should; he stepped up and delivered the right pitch at the right time. The others named in the Michtell Stating the Obvious report should follow Pettite’s lead and either admit their wrong doing or say prove it. Instead, watch for Roger Clemens to dance around the issue like he was auditioning for Dancing with the Stars. Watch for Barry Bonds to again lash out at the media and again say he never knowingly took steroids even though he could tell you, without blinking, the percentage of Vitamin B that goes into his body in a 12 hour period. Watch for the Hall of Fame voters to do now go on a crusade against Pettitte being worthy of the Hall of Fame because they don’t know if they can believe his full story.
Pettitte’s legacy should not be tarnished over whether you believe him on his two days of bad judgment or not. His legacy as one of the best pitchers of his era should remain in tact because he was man enough to admit he bad decision. As long as he doesn’t test positive, well, to me that shows that he learned from his two day mistake. We all make mistakes, so let’s not crucify Pettite, and let’s not bring the signs that say “Pettitte, the two sign means curve ball, not doing HGH for two days.” Bud Selig should just accept the apology and move on. If you still want a pound of flesh from Pettitte, well, then Bud should just fine or maybe make Pettitte do some PSA’s about the dangers of HGH. The guy said he is sorry and if he means it, well, the rule is accepting it and move on.
