Something About Brett Favre That Will Surprise You...

By John Jagler

In my quest to find something... anything new to talk about during Brett Favre week two.  I found it in this blog from the New York Times Sports Section.  The title is called Brett Favre and the Interception Myth.  Ask any Packers fan... what's was the worst part of Brett Favre's game?  The answer comes quick.  He took too many chances.  He threw too many interceptions.  The haters will close their arguement with the fact that nobody in the league has thrown more picks.

But the fact is he's also thrown more passes than anyone too.  And when you break down the numbers it turns out that in terms of percentage of passes intercepted, Favre does much better.  In fact, when you compare him to Hall of Fame Quarterbacks, he's one of the best in history.  He has played so long and so well that his 313 INTs amount to just 3.3 percent of his attempts. In fact, he has been less prone to interceptions than all but five Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

Bart Starr... the ultimate efficent QB right?  Favre easily beats him.   Johnny U?  Not even close.  Take a look:

Joe Namath: 5.8% (3,762 attempts, 220 INTs)

Terry Bradshaw: 5.4% (3,901 attempts, 210 INTs)

Johnny Unitas: 4.9% (5,186 attempts, 253 INTs)

Bart Starr: 4.4% (3,149 attempts, 138 INTs)

Brett Favre: 3.3% (9,280 attempts, 310 INTs)

The only Hall of Famers better?  John Elway 3.1, Dan Marino 3.0, Troy Aikman 3.0 and Joe Montana and Steve Young tied at 2.6%.

Admit it... that surprised you didn't it?

For the record, two of the 310 have been frozen in my brain forever.  The interception after 4th and 26 against the Eagles.  And of course, this one in the NFC Champtionship Game.

I used to use this argument all the time when he played for the Packers. Now I only choose to remember the big interceptions (noted above) and that's what I'll hope for while he plays for the Vikings. He's capable of CHOKING with the rest of that team.

With the Packer's O-Line, Brett's consecutive game streak might come to an end. He does not have the escapability he once did or the escapability of Arod. The Pack's record would not be any better if was behind center. He is having a great year with the Queens and if they are successful at reaching the SB, it will have been a Packer who helped them reach it. Green Bay has a good QB in Arod and when he gets help on the O-Line and running, the Packer’s will show how good they can really be. Bret

Brett Favre loves to play football and for this he is called a traitor. Bottom line he changed his mind and was told he would be a backup. As he has proved he can still play. I am a packers fan and a favre fan forever

Les, the only "mess" Thompson created was not doing everything Brett demanded. If he 'would have played for free' why didn't he in 2005. Not paying his salary would have left enough cap room to keep Wahle and Rivera.

How many big games has he won in the postseason? That is the mark of a "great" quarterback. He is a great QB in the regular season but not so much in the playoffs.

How about the 67 or so kids he spent time with for the Make A Wish Foundation? From what I've read, he's the most requested athlete and gives alot of himself to these poor kids. Why don't we ever see an article about THAT aspect of Brett Favre?

There's never been any secret about the percentage of Favre's interceptions. His problem was in the timing. They didn't sell "Brett Bricks" for nothing!

As a Milwaukee native and Packers fan living in the heart of Giants country, that picture breaks my heart on many levels. At least the Giants beat the Patriots.

Thanks for not jumping on the bandwagon. However, that screen shot you used is an inaccurate depiction of the play. I've seen this image used to bash Favre before. The ball is almost in the receivers hands. Another screen pic showed the other two receivers covered BEFORE the pass was made. The DBs already had broken their coverage because they were looking back and the ball was in the air.

I heard you on the radio this morning, and finally someone at WTMJ that is not a flat out Favre hater (your partner and the little unit are the worst). But I contend that you have it wrong too. If given the chance to play in GB (before this ted thompson created mess) with ted thompson, murphy and mccarthy gone, I think Favre would have played for Bob Harlen and a new coach for free.

Bob in Zion - you beat me to the punch. The other thing to consider is the future hall of famers and what their ratios are. Mr. Jagler - Thanks for bringing up the NFC Championship game again. I had finally gotten it out of my mind.

It's not so much the percentage but when they occurred. And notice that of the "modern" QB's he's at the bottom of the list of the one's considered by most to be great.
