"We had no tipoff he was coming"..

By John Jagler

Not the Lama Daily Times photo by John HartThat's because it wasn't him.  Watertown was all a twitter Thursday.  The Dalai Lama was in town.  Or so folks who work at Perkins and their customers thought.  The real Dalai Lama was in Madison for a conference that attracted hundreds of people, including a Tibetan Monk who just happened to be hungry.   When a guy wearing a sheet walks into a restaurant in Watertown, well of course.. it has to be the Dalai Lama right? Not quite.  The monk and his two man entourage were at the Johnson Creek outlet mall to buy candles.  When they walked into Perkins, they must have been treated like rock stars.  My favorite quote from this story in the Watertown Daily Times :
“We had no tip off that he was coming,” Perkins owner Augie Magestro said following the trio's departure at approximately 2:30 p.m., still under the impression the Dalai Lama had just been there.  It reminded me of living in Green Bay where everybody assumed every African-American male was a member of the Packers. Carl Spackler

Through his interpreter, the monk said he had enjoyed his lunch and his brief time in Watertown.  He probably was quite puzzled as to why he was given such top notch treatment.  I wonder If anyone has had the heart to tell the Perkins people it wasn't really the Lama.

From what I hear, the monkwasn't a good tipper.  When Augie asked him for, you know, something for the effort, he promise him "Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga".  Meaning Augie will now have total consciousness on his death bed.  At least he's got that going for him.. which is nice.
