We called it Jagler Field.
It was my backyard on Clement Avenue in Oak Creek. We used it almost every day in the summer for wiffle ball. Now that I am older, I realize how lucky I was to have great neighbors. You see, the left field of "Jagler Field" extended into the neighbor's yard. More accurately, their roof was an extension of the home run fence and their patio and flower garden were in play. We did try to punish hitters who swatted the plastic balls that way. It was an "automatic out" if it went into the flowers. It was also an automatic out if you fouled it off into the other neighbor's pool. That didn't stop it from happening though. The Koutalis roof was constantly pelted, their gutters clogged with wiffle balls and young boys ran through their yard at a brisk pace. I don't know if I would have the patience my neighbors did. Actually, yes I do.. I wouldn't have tolerated it. That's why I see both sides of this story in the New York Times. Kids in Connecticut turned a weed/poison ivy filled lot into a wiffle ball park, complete with a fence and flagpole. They put down the video games and did it on their own. Now, the neighbors are freaking and the lawyers have been called. They can't use Jagler Field as an option anymore. We've moved, the neighbors have moved and the trees are too big.. but those were the days.
