The Cult Of The One!

By Jeff Wagner

I know that it infuriates some on the Left - but I'm with my colleagues Charlie Sykes and James T. Harris on this one.

The new music video released on YouTube by a "grassroots" group not affiliated with the Obama campaign showing cute kids singing Obama's praises is, well, really creepy.  As much as Obama's supporters resent the inevitable comparison, it's also extremely reminiscent of the chilling beer garden scene in the film "Cabaret" where the young man sings "Tomorrow Belongs To Me".

Let me say this clearly.  By making the reference to "Cabaret", I am in no way equating Barack Obama with Adolph Hitler! I do however think that some Obama supporters are exhibiting an almost cult-like devotion to their candidate.  Beyond this, at the risk of alienating the cultists among us, I don't think blind devotion to anything (except perhaps the Green Bay Packers) is healthy.

This devotion among Obama supporters has manifested itself in some very troubling ways lately.

For example, there was the concerted attack launched by Obama supporters at  WGN Radio in Chicago after the station provided a a forum for a pair of authors who had written materials critical of Obama.  Then, there was the announcement in Missouri that Obama "truth squads" comprised of law enforcement officials would be fact-checking ads run against Obama.

As an aside, perhaps some of those "truth squads" could focus their attention on the blatantly false ad that the Obama campaign has been running in Wisconsin about McCain's position on stem cell research.

Three weeks ago, John McCain was leading in the polls.  Those same polls now suggest that if the election were held today, Obama would win.  Who knows what will happen a month from now?

Regardless, everyone would do well do remember that we're electing men and women to office - not elevating them to the status of deities.  After all, tomorrow really belongs to all of us.
