Planned Economy or Planned Destruction?

By James T Harris

Image001 I first saw this editorial cartoon from 1934 on Tom McMahon's site. You can also see it on Pajamas Media.. (Click to enlarge)

If you have seen my Navigating the Seasons of Change presentation (the most popular speech in my line up), this cartoon should send shivers down your spine. I propose that history isn't linear, it's seasonal. Therefore, history doesn't repeat, it rhymes.  So, is history rhyming?

You betcha!

Being a disciple of William Strauss and Neil Howe, I also propose in this presentation that approximately every 75 years a generation experiences a season similar to what their grandparents witnessed.

75 years ago, America was in an economic winter. Does anyone dispute that? The previous winter is known as the Great Depression and World War II.

It’s winter again in America. Study this cartoon and do the math.

I am sure you are familiar with the phrase, "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.”
Economists argue that Roosevelt ’s spending programs in the 1930s failed to turn the economy around and that it took World War II to reverse that trend.

Hmmmm.

If the current administration continues down this road, we will be doomed to far worse than any generation in history has experienced. Historical winters always bring sweeping change. This time around the stakes are higher and the weapons of war are far more deadly.
The question is, what happens when the “change we can believe in” turns out to be the same failed policies of the past?

Doom.
