Hockey Heartbreak, But Is It Real?

By Gene Mueller

We've all been to sporting events where a guy proposes to a girl on the scoreboard.   Usually, it generates an obligatory "I DO!" as the scene dissolves into tears and hugs.

Not so this weekend in New York City where a Rangers fan popped the question at Madison Square Garden, only to be rebuffed in front of thousands of horrified, booing onlookers.

Smell a rat?    I do, and so does this morning's "New York Post": Some wonder whether it was a Valentine's Day prank."I thought maybe it was staged because of Valentine's Day," Rangers center Erik Christensen said. "Was that real?"  The Bergen Record newspaper in New Jersey says two Garden sources claim it was all a stunt, although stadium officials thought the proposal was real when they put it on the big screen.

A few readers responding in the "comments" section beneath the online story think it's phony, too, but one had the best line: "Rangers won.   That's all I care about."

That's the chance you take when you do something so stupid and reckless. What he did is practically give her an ultimatum. What a knob!
