Who Is Brett Favre?

By Gene Mueller

         Who is Brett Favre?

Is he the fearless football general who led the Packers back to NFL relevance and a pair of Super Bowl appearances in the 90's, who came within a frozen overtime of a third?

Or, is he the guy who lets his mom, brother, pet local writer and agent do his talking for him?

Is he the decisive, headstrong leader who played the game his way, coaches and critics be damned?

Or, is he just another confused jock who can't make life decisions, much less take responsibility for the consequences of his retirement indecisiveness?

       Who is Brett Favre?

None of us knows, and only he can be certain of his motives as this growing situation between he and the Packers brass grows more toxic by the interview.      All we can do is look at the body of his actions.

Are we to believe the Favre who took others to task (Sterling Sharpe and Javon Walker) when they threatened to re-neg on signed contracts, or are we to listen to the one who balks at the thought of the Packers actually holding his feet to the fire if he decides to come back to the NFL in 2008 by making him STAY in Green Bay, as per his existing deal?

Do you listen to the Favre who told us that his retirement was his decision and his alone, as he did that weepy March afternoon, or do we take the word of the guy sitting opposite Greta Van Susteren Monday night...the one who blames management for having the audacity of asking for a decision on his career before the draft and free agency?

Do we take Favre at his word when he says the Pack's reluctance to aggressively go after Randy Moss left no mark, or so we believe the man who lists Ted Thompson's decision not to sign the locker room cancer as among the three things the team did to set him off (the others being the failure to sign two free agent offensive linemen or to hire Steve Mariucci as Mike Sherman's replacement)?

Can you take Favre at his word when he says he's now 100% per cent committed to playing again--something he says he wasn't close to four months ago?        Is this a guy who'll now be in for the long haul, or will he want to bolt at some point during the season after the team is once again reconfigured to his skill set?

Do you believe a guy who hand-selects his interviewer, a t-v personality not necessarily known for her sports-journalism, or do you wish he'd have sat down with Peter King, Chris Mortensen, Jay Glazer or even (gulp) John Madden?

       Who is Brett Favre?

To me, he's just another confused jock who can't let go...a guy who got a brief peek at a football-free future and blanched.       He's a man who has never had to deal with a real-world workplace, one who is accustomed to having his way at every turn and who bucks and fusses when he's told "no".      Favre is slowly but steadily flushing a whole bunch of good will by failing to take responsibility for the consequences of his indecision, who wants to have it both ways, who thinks the Packers somehow owe him the quarterback post he so tearfully handed over back in March.      Try leaving YOUR job and coming back to your old position after a few months.     Better yet, try doing it if you have a contract.      Then, if you really want to wag your big brass ones, tell your employer WHERE you'd like to work after you bolt.         He's a pro football player who had the run of things when Mike Sherman was coach and GM, someone who still thinks he should have a say in the team's personnel decisions even after a new sheriff (Ted Thompson) came to town.       And, Favre would seem to be a guy who wanted his butt washed, kissed and powdered so he knows he's still loved.      Anything less is apparently taken as a show of disrespect and disregard.

        Who is Brett Favre?

There'd been a time when he was a beloved quarterback who was someone I'd be happy to have my son emulate in terms of work ethic, perseverance, durability, and "real-guy" charisma.      But now, I'm not sure who he is.

And, I'm not even positive I care that he might not be in Green Bay anymore.
