Gasp! Should the Packers Have Kept Favre After All?

By Dan O'Donnell

I didn't want to write this, I really didn't.  Heck, I don't even want to be thinking it.  Yet some time in the middle of Brett Favre's second consecutive dissection of my beloved Packers, I was.  Again.  For the first time since last summer, I got that queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.  For the first time in a long time, I thought the thought that no devoted Packer fan should.

Maybe they should have taken Brett back after all.

I know what you're thinking right now, believe me, I know...and I agree with you.  I'm an idiot.  I'm living in the past.  I'm a hopeless romantic who remembers the records and comebacks but conveniently forgets the infuriating interceptions in pressure situations and diva behavior each offseason.  Trust me, I remember.

And yes, I do agree that Aaron Rodgers is one of the best young quarterbacks in football and that even with my beloved St. Brett behind center, Green Bay's banged-up defense would have still relegated the team to a sub-.500 record last season.

So why am I thinking that Green Bay should have welcomed him back with open arms four months after he retired?  Why am I putting a player--no matter how talented he my be--ahead of the team (much like Favre himself did when he put the Packers through the awkward Training Camp Circus of 2008)?

Because this player proved tonight that he is still, at age 40, one of the best quarterbacks in the league and, more importantly, a leader of men who makes everyone on his team just a little bit better.  With no disrespect to Rodgers, Favre's veteran leadership is precisely what separates good teams from great ones, and it is Favre's presence in Minnesota that has turned it from a great collection of players into a Super Bowl-contending team.

This is the ultimate irony of Favre: he is quite possibly one of the most selfish, "me-first" players in the NFL off of the field, but once the game starts, he is both a consummate teammate and exceptional field general.  With the precision passing and cannon arm of a man half his age and veteran moxy unrivaled in all of professional sports, Favre is able to lead by example and win with talent.

Not coincidentally, this leadership and sense of direction have eluded the Packers since Favre was traded to New York.  The youngest roster in the NFL (for what feels like the tenth consecutive season) is still racking up foolish penalties, missing easy blocking assignments, and looking generally lost in crunch time.  Why do you think they brought back Ahman Green?  It sure wasn't to return kicks!

No, the Packers recognized a deep void in their locker room that will never show up in the stat sheet--heart, grit, swagger.  Green Bay doesn't so much miss its Dan Marino.  It misses its General Patton.

Though much is made of Favre's stellar supporting cast in Minnesota (an I won't argue that Adrian Peterson is the best running back in football, that the Vikings have a bruising offensive line, or that their pass rush is downright terrifying), it has been Brett more than any of his teammates--even Peterson--who has won the Vikings football games this season.

Think about it.  In Minnesota's two wins against the Packers, Peterson was solid but hardly spectacular but Favre threw for seven touchdowns.  While Green Bay focused on containing Peterson, it was Favre who picked apart their normally-staunch secondary.  Even when the superstar running back wasn't dominating, the Vikings were still winning.  Why?  Heart, grit, swagger.

I hate myself for even thinking this--let alone writing about it--but I'm starting to believe that my Pack has a serious deficiency of all three, and for the first time in a long time I believe I know why.

  1. People in Green Bay are a joke. Im a huge fan that sits back and laughs at this whole thing from afar. I grew up an hour from Green Bay but live in the South. I purchase the NFL ticket every year so I can watch all the games. The Packer fans are embarrasing, people in Wisconsin think on pop warner terms. The only thing that should have been asked last year was "does Favre give us the best chance to win on Sundays" For people in Wisconsin to say hes this selfish buzzard is a disgrace
  2. Dan, you hit it on the head. The one thing this young team is missing is a leader. With young players you need a General Patton. You HAVE TO instill discipline. If you don't, you may as well spend cap money to add a few PROFESSIONALS who have discipline. I don't disagree with you that Rodgers is a great young player with huge potential, but does he have the 'it' factor? I just don't get the sense that he's a winner and commands his team to have the will to win. We see it with Favre...
  3. This is Ted Thompson's trainwreck. He brought this on all by himself, especially with the classless manner in which he dissed one of the greatest players in franchise history. Personally, I enjoyed both of these games and I'd love it if the Vikings won the Super Bowl just to see the crap sandwich ol' Ted would have to eat. The blank look on the face of ol' Wile E. Thompson, Supergenius, at the end of the game was priceless.
  4. Hey Anonymous.. you call yourself a fan, yet write 'anonymous'? "I'm a huge fan", yet you laugh from afar? How are Packer fans embarrasing... Because we boo an opposing player?
  5. BreNt Favre and the Vikes win the Super Bowl, TT and McCarthy FIRED. Brett comes back in '10!! One last hurrah?
  6. Well written .... It is a sad thought to have, but the Pack WOULD be better with the king of all prima donas - Brett Favre. The team is a mess, and if you look at their schedule, this team will be about 8 and 8. Ted Thompson, he of the very inexperienced team, the terrible offensive line, the hiring of MM, and what will be 4 non playoff years in 5, needs to be FIRED!
  7. I know I'm in the minority on this but the one thing Thompson did right was moving on and handing the keys to Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers has shown himself to be a great QB for us. If you look at every loss we've had since Rodgers took over, you can only conclude that they had something to do with poor defense or terrible o-line performance. This year, Rodgers' passer rating is 110.4, best in the league while being sacked 25 times before the Viking game. What if he had a good o-line?
  8. Go Favre, go Vikings!
  9. If you work for an employer for 16 years, then they don't want you because you are getting old. How would you feel?

if you booed you're an ignorant person let alone rude. Just enjoy the game people. It's just Sports!
  10. Yea Favre has still got it. But got what? Sure he's a gunslinger who also - by the way - leads the NFL in interceptions with 313 to date!

But is the guy any team's future? I think not. After the ViQueens have pissed away a season or two on this dude, and he's finally done for life, the Pack will be looking them in the face with the youngest team in football, led by a premiere quarterback whose there to stay.

That's more than the Pack has had for a while!

A game or two can't change that!
  11. You'll all remember why we moved on when Brett completely chokes in the playoffs and the Vikings are left wondering "Why?" again this offseason.

Same happened to us. Did we all forget Favre went through a 4-12 season followed by 8-8 with our loveable Packers? Where was "General Patton" then?

Give the team the tools to succeed and the
ywill. I don't think Rodgers can "will" the defense to not give up 38 pts... The QB is one player on a 53 player team.
  12. Thanks to the Packers for developing Brett for the Vikes! Rogers we'll steal you when your ready x pack fan
  13. The Packers organization, which chose to have TT and MM run the show, deserve exactly what they got, all wrapped up with a nice purple ribbon by the greatest football player the Packers will ever have, but then didn't want. The do-nothing executive committee can scratch their collective heads and wonder what happened. I think we're back to the Judge Parins days and it doesn't look good. The wheels have fallen off the cart and the remainder of the season will be a disaster.
  14. You play for NOW in the NFL, not the possible future. Favre is/was now, telling/making him to go elsewhere (Jets) was a huge mistake. With him on Vikes 2 years later and winning/ BEATING A(hold on the ball way to freakin long)Rod makes u wonder what management was thinking....
  15. Favre was not the difference. Chilly will never remind anyone of Lombardi (or even Bud Grant), but the difference was play calling. While Minnesota played the West Coast offense, with 3 step drops, setting up the run and long pass and keeping the QB's jersey clean, GB insisted on playing their … what is it? If your QB is getting hit, run slants, screens and short passes in the flat. McCarthy figured that out in the second half (one of his rare in game adjustments). Too bad it was too late.
  16. "remember why we moved on when Brett completely chokes in the playoffs and the Vikings are left wondering "Why?" again this offseason. Same happened to us. Did we all forget Favre went through a 4-12 season followed by 8-8 with our loveable Packers? Where was "General Patton""

That's a stupid thing to say, both those seasons were partially through Thompson's diastorous rebuilding strategy and dismissing Wahle and Rivera, Favre got sacked like Rodgers only older. Not this fault the team sucked.
  17. The better team won on Sunday led by Brett Favre..The move made by the Packers to move on without Brett Favre was a big mistake but a great move for the Vikings. All heart & soul playing by Brett Favre ..Go Vikings! A Favre Fan Forever
  18. Say what you want about Brett, but he is worth every penny he makes. He brings excitement to the game and you always have a chance to win with him on the field. I don't care if anyone thinks he is selfish, he was a team player on the field and that is all that counts. I'm not sure what anyone means by he was selfish. If the media would have stayed out of it, he might still be a Packer. Do it Brett! We are proud of you.
  19. All you "fans" that booed Favre when he came on the field should be ashamed of yourselves. Yes, it kills me that my favorite player is playing for the Vikings and Yes, I hate the Vikings as much as any Packer fan. But seriously, show a little respect for the man who gave everything of himself to the city of Green Bay. I am a Packer fan first but I respect the game of Football and I respect greatness, and Favre is in a league of his own when it comes to greatness. All you haters make me sick.
  20. With everyone giving their opinions, what is clear to me as i watched the game is-the Viking's brass have done a much better job of acquiring, drafting players than T.T. night and day-compare the 5 top players taken in the last 5yrs. Only Rogers is impact player-Greenway,Peterson,Harvin-let alone the trade for Allen- does anyone else see this! The beat writers for the packers will not hang T.T. out to dry! Its about time you do!!!
