By Dan O'Donnell

Here are the official press releases I just received, first from the Hardy option:

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers today optioned SS J.J. Hardy to Triple-A Nashville and recalled SS Alcides Escobar.  The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

Escobar was batting .298 with 4 HR, 34 RBI and 42 stolen bases in 109 games with the Sounds.  He participated in the 2009 All-Star Futures Game and Triple-A All-Star Game.  Escobar, who entered the year as the top prospect in the Brewers organization according to Baseball America, will report to the team tonight and wear uniform number 21.

Next from the Castro firing:

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers today dismissed Bill Castro as pitching coach and named Chris Bosio interim pitching coach.  The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

“We appreciate and admire the dedication and tireless work ethic put forth by Bill Castro over the last 18 seasons,” said Melvin.  “A move like this is never easy to make, especially given Bill’s longevity with the organization and considering how hard he worked to reach this position."

Castro was named pitching coach on November 7, 2008 after serving as bullpen coach from 1992-2008.  Through games of August 12, the Brewers’ pitching staff ranked 27th in the Major Leagues with a 4.84 ERA while allowing a Major League-leading 151 home runs in 112 games.  The staff also issued 421 walks, which marked the fifth-highest total in the majors.

Bosio, 46, was serving his first season as pitching coach at Triple-A Nashville.  Under his guidance, the Sounds entered today’s games tied for second in the Pacific Coast League in team ERA (4.05) while allowing the fourth-fewest home runs (83).  Bosio has also served as pitching coach at Double-A Chattanooga (2008) in the Reds organization and at Triple-A Tacoma (2001) in the Mariners organization.  In addition, he has experience as a pitching coach at the Major League level, serving under Lou Piniella with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003.

Bosio owns a career record as a Major League pitcher of 94-93 with a 3.96 ERA in 309 games, including 246 starts.  He pitched for Milwaukee (1986-92) and Seattle (1993-96) during 11 seasons.

Bosio will join the Brewers tonight and wear uniform number 43.

And from the Hall option:

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers today designated INF/OF Bill Hall for assignment and purchased the contract of OF Jason Bourgeois from Triple-A Nashville.  The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

Bourgeois was batting .316 with 2 HR, 41 RBI and 36 stolen bases in 105 games at Nashville.  He will wear uniform number 16.

Your thoughts, fans?  Were these shrewd moves to shake up a team that has been struggling mightily over the past two months, or were they the last gasps of desperation from an organization that, deep down, knows its season is already over?  Leave your comments below, and I'll read some of the best of them tonight on Brewers Extra Innings.

I think head coach, Ken Macha, is some of the problem. This man shows no emotion what so ever. It doesn't even look like he is behind his team. At least Ned Yost had reaction, and the guys knew he cared. What do you think would had happened had Ned Yost still been there when Fielder got hit by Mota's pitch? These guys need someone they know is behind them and I don't and I don't think Macha shows them that. Look Svuem shows more of that he even got suspended. Macha goes. Bring Yost back.

If this is about accountability, why is Kendall still here? Give Rivera his shot and bring Salome up. Get rid of Suppan and Villanueva too because neither of them have major league stuff

Why did Melvin (even though I believe he is the best G.M. in baseball based on what he has to work with!) or Micheals address why Kendall is still catching?? A pitching coach is one thing but the catcher calls the pitches!! Put rivera in see what happens!!

Some sort of move was due, but this shakeup won't do much because the main problem is still not solved: no pitching. Bosio won't fare much better with the lack of talent he is inheriting. Hopefully what this will do is wake up the offense that after peaking in June has taken the proverbial nosedive. Re: the Hardy move, as well as Escobar is hitting I don't expect him to duplicate it in the majors right out of the gate. Hopefully that won't affect his defense, the area Hardy has not slipped in.

Not opposed to the moves they made but the pitching staff is still rubbish. They lost Sheets and Sabathia and replaced them with looper. Ouch!

Although a hard working and dedicated coach, Bill Castro is no Mike Maddux. But I agree with Mike V in saying that I hope he is not a scapegoat. I am not surprised about Hardy or Hall. Yes, they are fan favorites. But lately they have played with little fire. I luv Supan, too. However; if we are honest, Jeff is just a plain, mediocre pitcher. Ultimately, the blame rests with the Manager. One can only hope that Doug M did not choose his buddy Mr. Macha just so he could pad his retirement fund.

I can't believe that Melvin is using Castro as a scapegoat. Castro's the fall guy? Melvin is the one who signed Suppan and Looper to lucrative deals. Melvin is responsible for the Brewers' adversity. They can't overcome the lack of talent in the starting rotation. How do you fire a pitching coach who has been in the organization for 17 years? It's redirecting the blame. Melvin has to go. Everyone knows that to compete in the MLB, you have to have 3 very good starting pitchers. The Brewers got 1.

Considering that the '27 Yankees had Tony Lazzeri(at .289) hitting eighth in their lineup, I would say these moves are long overdue. Get some new blood in the lineup and see how the team pulls together.

Not surprized by the moves, though I hate to see Bill Castro be the sacrificial lamb, he had served the Brewers well as the bullpen coach. The team knew going into the season that their starting pitching was weak. It's hard for a coach to make something out of nothing, the player still has to go out and perform.

THE WISEST THING WOULD BE TO FIRE THE HEAD COACH AND TO HIRE SOME FIRE AND BRIM IN THAT POSITION, A MAN WHO PROVED HE CAN DO IT--DALE SUANE--, BILL CASTRO AFTER 17 YEARS STILL SHOWED HIS LOVE FOR THE BREWERS, PUT HIM BACK IN THE BULL PEN WHERE HE DID AN EXCELLENT JOB

Glad they made a move, hope it is not to little too late. If I were a few of the rest of the Brewers I wouldn't answer my phone today either.

Coming from Boston and being here when the Brewers finished dead last for the season, something had to be done to instill that no one on the team is irreplaceable. Last nights game reminded me of the 2002 Brewers. This may wake players up that they are here to give it their all even when their loosing. They looked like they completely gave up last night.

These moves are good but the real move needs to be in the front office. Doug Melvin has had a few good moves but a lot of bad ones. He signed Hall to a contract that will cost them $8M next year which could have been used on a quality free agent. He also signed Suppan to big contract for an average pitcher at best. With no young pitching ready in the minors, next year will be the same story if he can't increase the payroll and get a quality starter or two.

Might be but the JJ Hardy move hopefully, will shake up the team more. I hate to see these guys leave for the minors but MAYBE, whatever is wrong with their hitting, fielding,or attitude, ect. will be corrected and they come back stronger!!! The season is not over--looking at the month of September, they COULD pull this off. Let's HOPE!

It's funny how a move like this, even with Escobar playing the way he has, is barely about the actual personnel involved and almost entirely about the mental effects it will have on the team.
