KLEEFISCH REPORT: BLOCKING THE PUBLIC

By Charlie Sykes

CCAP. That's the website that quickly helps you see whether someone's been involved in a WI court case-- from a traffic ticket to a murder. But some want to restrict our access to CCAP and the knowledge the government actually supplies to the average guy who wants to search for it. Why?

Some newspapers publish a list of names of people who have committed various infractions/crimes. What's the difference if the paper publishes it or ordinary citizens have on-line access to it? It's embarrassing but isn't that the idea?

There is absolutely no reason why EVERY aspect of someone's life needs to be available for committing a traffic citation. If RebeccaForReal is a former reporter, she should know how to go down to the courthouse and obtain these records, which by the way, would still be possible under this bill. If this bill makes reporters work a little harder, tough.

If you get into a fender-bender in Milwaukee. Everything about you AND all passengers (name, address, injuries, even insurance info) is provided for all to see by MPD. This must be an ambulance chasers dream. Let's hope you have somebody watching the house while you're in the hospital. :(

I'm going against the grain here, but I think the on-line access 'should' be limited. As long as we can go to a courthouse and get this info, it should be good enough. Allowing hackers in the Ukraine (or snoops anywhere on Earth) access to our personal info is asking for trouble. For a speeding ticket 4 years ago, one shouldn't be exposed to the world by our government like this. If prison was involved I wouldn't have a problem with it, but they have opened the door too wide.

Is Portage County--AKA little Dane-- still the only county in the state exempted from CCAP? I always thought that was interesting from a potential corruption angle.

This kind of access makes Wisconsin "progressive" in a good way. CCAP should remain free to use for all. Also, there is a bill to restrict 911 calls from being disclosed to the public. These things are a matter of public interest and are used to determine if the public servants are acting in an appropriate manner.
