HERB KOHL'S WAR AGAINST Al QAEDA

By Charlie Sykes

Yeah, that's the ticket: it's not about the money... it's about...the kids....er...actually it's about fighting terrorism.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Milwaukee, urged his Senate colleagues this week to support his bill to prevent terrorist groups from financing their operations through the black-market sales of cigarettes.

In introducing his legislation in May, Kohl said cigarette smuggling has become a lucrative revenue stream for criminal and terrorist groups such as al-Qaida, Hamas and Hezbollah. He noted that the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating more than 400 cases of cigarette smuggling; it had only six cases in 1998...

"Each day we delay its passage, terrorists and criminals raise more money, states lose significant amounts of tax revenue, and kids have easy access to tobacco products over the Internet," Kohl said at a news conference.

I believe the initial H in "Herb" is silent. That's because it isn't a name, as commonly thought, but a description. He is, to be precise, parsley -- inoffensive, scarcely noticeable, seldom missed.

Actually, I think that comparing Herb to parsley is...insulting to parsley. At least you can use parsley in spaghetti.

Senator Kohl: Way to make the tough choices! I am sure OBL and his crew will really be off their game once they hear what you are proposing. Once your legislation passes (and it will pass this Congress)I would send OBL a well crafted and stern warning letter to "knock it off". Make sure you are not too tough though as we might just misunderstand them. You wouldn't want their feelings to be hurt now would you?

This is what I gathered from Kohl's message: "Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, states lose significant amounts of tax revenue, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah." After all, what is really important here?

Does this even matter. After Ring Master Holder holds his circus al-Qaida will offically become a federally funded community organizing group.

I agree that Kohl is an ineffective Senator who seems to buy himself re-election every 6 years but what in the hell does his marital status have to do with anything?

Is it really so surprising that this politician does not understand that constantly raising the tax on cigarettes provided job security for our local mafia, and that some of those criminals engaging in smuggling might be terrorists? Tax the crap out of anything, and you create a new market for criminals. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here, since you all get that. Hey, I got an idea! How about we pay for the investigation by increasing the tax on cigarettes?

"Nobody's senator but yours" is ridiculous and ragingly disingenuous. He spends record numbers of millions each election (not from “special interests” we are told ad infinitum) to propagandize the electorate with nonstop fluff-ball ads and effectively crush his opponents. It just begs the question, so one must be a filthy rich trillionaire to run for the Senate and still be considered untainted? At least he’s still getting royalties for being mentioned in the classic song “Scarborough Fair”

LOL. Gee, I really don't think the internet sale of cigs are really what is financing Al Qaida. The bill is of no value because it does nothing but increase the risk of someone running afoul of the law.

You didn't explain why this bill would be of no value.Instead focussing on childish insults. At least Sen. Kohl has the integrity you and your "protege", Mr. Mac sadly lack.

Herb Kohl's bill addresses internet sales of tobacco. Is this the way terrorists are financing their operations?

forgive me for being just a poor peasant, but does it take a Harvard education to figure out that law makers and taxes are creating the black market for cigarettes? Ask Canada, they've been down this road before. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
