AN OUTSTANDING CHOICEBy Charlie SykesSeven months after Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan left for New York, the Vatican on Saturday announced his successor, naming Bishop Jerome Edward Listecki of La Crosse as the new spiritual leader of Southeastern Wisconsin's nearly 700,000 Catholics. Listecki, 60, will be installed as the Milwaukee Archbishop in early January. A south-side Chicago native and retired military man, Listecki has been described as "Dolanesque" in his dealings with parishioners - an engaging storyteller who mingles well at baptisms and confirmations. But unlike Dolan during his tenure in Milwaukee, Listecki has been more inclined to wade into the political fray, admonishing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her misstatement on Catholic teachings on the beginnings of life and criticizing the University of Notre Dame's decision to honor Barack Obama earlier this year. |

Wondering if this pro-life Bishop also admonished Notre Dame for hosting George W Bush, the man responsible for putting more people to death as Governor of Texas than any other modern American. Pro-life means anti-abortion and anti-death penalty. Where were all the outraged Catholics on that one??? As a Notre Dame grad, I found the hypocrisy deafening.

Paranoia amongst the Moon-Bats is alive and well - they even fear a Catholic Bishop who defends his Faith, even in the political arena, to some extent - "When fear abounds amongst the Left, we may begin to hope again" - who said that?

Welcome, Archbishop Listecki. I don't always agree with 100% of Catholicism but that's not to say that I don't admire a staunch defender of his faith and a strong leader. I hope he does wade into some political matters and he maybe he can advise Notre Dame aabout replacing their coach too!

Amy, some of you folks should hope that the holy Jihad doesn't extend to fornicators and the vast majority of Catholics who don't use the Lawrence Welk method of contraception (a-one and a-two, the rhythm method).

No, I will not "enlighten" you, Still Married Once, because you're obfuscating the issue. The Catechism is available online. Look it up and figure it out for yourself. John - you are very welcome!

Thank you for the defense of the Catholic Church against these inane comments. People who don't have Faith just don't understand. God Bless!

"...marriage has NOTHING to do with Listecki's appointment..." Aren't you assuming, Amy, that Listecki will limit the holy Jihad to abortion and gay marriage? Isn't it worse for a supposed Catholic to abandon his or her spouse than to express support for abortion rights without actually having one? Isn't the "evil deed" worse than the "evil thought" Enlighten those of us with less faith, please.

*I* "don't have a clue? Right. No, I'm not "God's gift to Catholicism"...Catholicism is God's gift to me, and I'm going to defend that gift when idiots like you smear it (or one of my fellow Catholics). The two of you who took this so off topic prove how immature liberals really are; marriage has NOTHING to do with Listecki's appointment, but it's a convenient way to make a childish attack because Listecki will continue Dolan's legacy of DEFENDING Catholicism against morons like you.

Don't be too hard on Amy as she thinks she is God's gift to Catholicism. And it is her way or the highway even it would appear that she simply doesn't have a clue.

Oh, you guys are such jerks. You know nothing about the Catholic sacraments of reconciliation or marriage, do you? You couldn't explain them to me if your life depended on it, yet you're CERTAIN the people you don't like have not received these sacraments. These childish ad hominems are irrelevant to the discussion, or the fact Listecki is a great choice for Milwaukee.

I guess a guy working on his third marriage would not be too concerned about any moral or spirtual guidance the new Bishop may bring to Milwaukee as all Commandments obviously don't apply, at least to him. But if there is a chance he may be critical of liberals then he is a good choice, unless of course he is critical of conservatives then he will be a bad choice.

In the opinion of this former clergyman who converted to Catholicism, Bp. Listecki is an outstanding choice -- and one, frankly, which does not particularly surprise me. I'm quite excited about his appointment to Milwaukee -- and would not be surprised if he were here for many years to come. God bless you, Bp. Listecki, and welcome!

Also, we don't "subsidize" churches, we let them conduct business free from Government persecution/taxation/indoctrination - at least for now - watch out for the Obama purge of Conservatives in Religion soon (via elimination of tax-exempt status), just like the purge of Republicans in Civil Service - Big Brother Obama is alive and well for now - we must stop Big Brother in 2010 and 2012

I'm not a Catholic, but I applaud anyone willing to admonish Pelosi on her Anti-Life position, and also to admonish Notre Dame on allowing the Anti-Life Obama to speak there. Go Listecki!

The "subsidy" argument is BS. The half that objects to Listecki's appointment are probably liberal, and would do the Catholic Church a favor by becoming Episcopalian - not a preferred choice, but the honest solution for folks who just disagree with Catholic teaching. By the way, Listecki is the FIRST Archbishop of Milwaukee who is neither German nor Irish.

I like what I am reading about him. I loved Archbishop Dolan but do wish he was more assertive on some of these political issues. IMO this is a good choice.

AN OUTSTANDING CHOICE: He will be embraced by about half the people and scorned by the other half of the congregation. Mixing religion and politics is a toxic brew. And remember we already subsidize this church and every other through the tax code.
