UWM POST UPDATE

By Charlie Sykes

A local rabbi sees a lesson in campus journalism in the controversy at UWM.

Sinai's own Savannah Hunnicutt, a UWM sophomore, had the unfortunate experience of having a story retracted by the UWM Post editor for completely spurious reasons. Savannah reported on a gathering of speakers who were comparing Israel with Apartheid South Africa and calling for divestment in companies that do business with Israel. Unfortunately, most of the comments from speakers were vilifying Israelis and denying Israel's right to exist.

The first link below connects to the UWM Post Story that was "retracted."

The second is an audio podcast from the "Charlie Sykes" show on WTMJ 620 am. I don't often find myself in complete agreement with Charlie, but I think his comments are right on target in this case.

I want to acknowledge Savannah's bravery in the face of the bias and hate she witnessed and experienced. Her story is not unique. College campuses are rife with anti-Israel activities. This has eroded the support of Israel, which among young Jews used to be much stronger.

What's your reaction to this event? What can we/should we do about it?

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi David Cohen

UWM's editor's continue to try to defend their decision:

Dear Mr. Sykes,

I fully expect you to post the attached documents in a prominent place on your website by the end of the day. Doing so would only be fair to The UWM Post and to your listeners and readers.

To make this easier for you, I've taken the time to upload the attached documents to our web server. Here are the URL's, which you can link to on your site:

I stand by Mr. Swieciak's statement. We thought it appropriate for him to provide his thoughts, as he was the one dealing with Hunnicutt. Please don't hesitate to call me if you have any questions.

Editor in Chief
The UWM Post

My response:

"I fully intend to publish and cite your response. In detail. But unlike the editors of the UWM Post, I do not cave into pressure or threats from special interest groups, or student journalists trying desperately to cover their rear-ends. Your attempt to discredit your own reporter is troubling and your responses are disingenuous at best. I fully intend to continue to talk about the triumph of political correctness over journalistic integrity at the UWM Post."

Honestly I believe the journalist. Since when is there a presentation above the 4th grade level that is not on film? I demand to see the CCTV feed from that auditorium of the presentation. The fact that there is absolutely no record of the presentation anywhere means that I have to trust the reporter.

Since the concensus is Ms. Hunnicutt accurately captured the tenor of the event, then why wouldn't the editor just publish a correction instead of retracting the entire article. In the future I would advise Ms. Hunnicutt to use an audio recorder to: 1) allow her to dictate exact quotes 2) protect herself against a politically correct editor searching for a reason to discredit her.

One comment after reading that rambling, incoherent letter from Lessmiller: I thought it was ILLEGAL to publicly state grounds for dismissal in ANY job.

1. When was the last time a newspaper retracted an entire story? 2. Did they have convincing evidence that there were errors BEFORE they pulled the wholoe story? 3. Is everyt quotation published by the Post tape recorded? 4. Mr. Sweieciak, please see me after class.

Whoa. I know it's been a long time since I was in J school, but since when is it a MUST that you have audio recordings? So should you have a video recording as well? Ask the reporters at the Journal if they have audio backup...I would think not, at least not all of the time. Point is, HardFacts, audio doesn't make a complete journalistic job.

I have to agree with UWM on this one, the reporter couldn't produce proof of the quotes using the recommended (and probably university provided) audio equipment to do a complete journalistic job. If she had the audio proof, THEN I would fully think this may have been out of line. Simply put, I don't see how there is anyway this student could be 100% victim here by any means. Sounds like the UWM Post got this one right. Nice job Mr. Swieciak on the detailed response.
