FRIDAY HOT READ: DEMOLISHING THE MYTH OF '08

By Charlie Sykes

Charles Krauthammer on the significance of Tuesdays' votes.

WASHINGTON -- Sure, Election Day 2009 will scare moderate Democrats and make passage of Obamacare more difficult. Sure, it makes it easier for resurgent Republicans to raise money and recruit candidates for 2010. But the most important effect of Tuesday's elections is historical. It demolishes the great realignment myth of 2008.

In the aftermath of last year's Obama sweep, we heard endlessly about its fundamental, revolutionary, transformational nature. How it was ushering in an FDR-like realignment for the 21st century in which new demographics -- most prominently, rising minorities and the young -- would bury the GOP far into the future. One book proclaimed "The Death of Conservatism," while the more modest merely predicted the terminal decline of the Republican Party into a regional party of the Deep South or a rump party of marginalized angry white men.

This was all ridiculous from the beginning. 2008 was a historical anomaly. A uniquely charismatic candidate was running at a time of deep war weariness, with an intensely unpopular Republican president, against a politically incompetent opponent, amid the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. And still he won by only seven points.

Landslide in Virginia and a Republican elected in NJ!! (I saw some focus group with NJ people, and they were the dumbest bunch of LIBS I've ever seen - and Corzine outspent the Repub 5 to 1 - and the Dem Corzine still lost!!) Total votes in VA and NJ were at least a hundred-fold more than the tiny district in NY

Krauthammer is right on. A right wing wave is sweeping the nation as evidenced by New York's 23rd Congressional District, a seat lost to a Democrat for the first time in about 30 years. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704500604574483990102017038.html

The base of ignorant sheeple and the base of “free lunchers” still remains. They need to be educated in how conservatism (not necessary the GOP) is to their advantage. They will either be educated or will learn the hard way when the evil rich and other tax payers that pay for the “free lunch” are gone

I personally called over 25 Congress offices yesterday asking whether they were in support of healthcare. I am watching to see how they vote and WILL back anyone that I can see as fiscally conservative to run against YES voters in 2010.

The GOP must realize that they must give this country candidates who are clearly different and allow the electorate to decide.

The 2008 election was between a liberal and another liberal. Perhaps had the people had a real choice we might not be in this mess. We finally got past a POTUS the media portrayed as an idiot and elected someone who actually is. Mooooo!
