WEDNESDAY HOT READ: MEMO TO TOM BARRETT

By Charlie Sykes

To Mayor Barrett:

As you head off for your photo op with The One today, you might consider several things.

We all know the president is putting on a full court press to get you to jumnp into the race for governor. And, he or his folks, are likely, in their not so subtle Chicago way, making a variety of promises.

Of money. Of support.

Maybe even promises that The One Himself would come here to campaign for you.

As you prep for your discussions with the White House, you might want think a bit about what happened yesterday in Virginia.

And New Jersey.

Obama campaigned heavily in both states and went all in in Jersey, where Democrat John Corzine spent more money than God on his re-election campaign in a state that is about as blue as they come. Would you be able to raise and spend more than Corzine? Would The One make as many campaign appearances as he did for Democrats in Virginia and Jersey?

And in both states: the top issues were jobs, the economy, and taxes. Here's what ABC's pollsters had to say:

Perhaps most striking were economic views: A vast 89 percent in New Jersey and 85 percent in Virginia said they were worried about the direction of the nation's economy in the next year; 56 percent and 53 percent, respectively, said they were "very" worried about it.

Voters who expressed the highest levels of economic discontent heavily favored the Republican candidates in both states – underscoring the challenge Obama and his party may face in 2010 if economic attitudes don't improve. The analogy is to 1994, when nearly six in 10 voters said the economy was in bad shape, and they favored the out-of-power Republicans by 26 points, helping the GOP to a 52-seat gain and control of Congress for the first time in 42 years.

Jobs. Taxes. The Economy.

How's that going to play in Wisconsin next year? And what what you run on? The Obama record? Your record as mayor?

In any case remember to smile and make sure to get that shot of you and the president together.

If Barrett wanted to run for Governor, he would have gotten in long ago - he can be mayor for life in Milwaukee, and he's likely to lose the Governor's race this time (again - he already lost to Doyle once) - if Barrett is wise, he'd resist the Obama/Chicago Machine pressure - I wonder how they're threatening him if he doesn't run?

Any idiot know NY 23 was lost by the Republican party establishment. A guy running with little money on a 3rd party ticket overcame great odds to make it a close race. How many early Republican voters voted for the Dee Dee ditz? Ironically, this race was closer than any of the other races lost my Democrats. Earlier commenter said people were fooled by Democrats in 2006 and 2008. They were, but as another commenter pointed out they shouldn't have been. Fiscally conservative Democrat? What a joke.

Well for once I agree with you. I believe that those who are in office should take notice. I didn't vote for President Obama but I believe many of those who voted for him because they were duped into believing he was a candidate for change. President Obama seriously misjudged the reason for his success in 2008. I think real America wants there country back from the Political Class and I don't think it matters how long they have been in office.

If Scott Walker is god's gift to Wisconsin, at least according to talk radio, why would any Democrat think of running against him, assuming he is the nominee. Oh yeah, I forgot, conservative Democrats don't really turn out in big numbers for Republicans. Actually they don't turn out at all, which explains, Doyle, Plale, Carpenter, etc. Sounds like Barrett could win

Did you notice that BO and Biden campaigned HARD for BOTH liberal Governors in New Jersey (a DEEP BLUE state) and Virginia (a swing state)? The NY seat is only a two year seat, Governors are in office for 4 years each, I don’t know I still see a victory here for Conservatives. You should really change your brand of Kool-aid.

"... this was a loss for those trying to drag the Republican party far to the right." Nope. While a conservative (effectively a R) in the seat immediately would have been nice, a D now w/ real prospects of retaking the seat in the very near term beats the heck out of a de facto D mislabeled as a R entrenched indefinitely. Clearly the R party could have won this seat united behind a conservative. That will still be true for this seat in the coming election, and will be true elsewhere.

Hoffman had an uphill battle all the way, capped by Scozza endorsing his opponent (didnt she quit for the "good" of the GOP?) and limited by his own weak personality. And the propoganda that this has always been a red district is incorrect. Wiki "New York 23 district"

NY23 also tells us RINO lovers are unwilling to do what they constantly ask of others. Scozzafava supporters voting on issues alone went to Owens, but 5% threw their votes away rather than hold their noses and do what WOULD have the seat away from the Ds. Conservatives sitting on their hands get blamed for RINOs losing, and this is no different the other way around. If the R party had accepted that it could have won with a conservative here, it would have.

It's a reach to suggest that NY23 shows the country prefers moderates: 1) NY23 isn't the whole country and 2) There were no moderates in the picture in NY23. A win for Owens is not such a bad thing; a GOP with its act together can take the seat back next cycle, and one more D between now and then isn't going to matter much anyway. A Scozzafava win would have been a disaster; affectively a D vote on all important issues, protected by the party from challenge from the right long into the future.

Poor Andrew, trying to put a happy face on this liberal disaster. Let’s see now, as far as the NY election goes, try to stay with me. The liberal won with 49%, the conservative won by 46% AND 6% more went to the other candidate with an “R” after her name. In case you’re having trouble with simple math that is 52% of the vote went to the Conservative, and Republican, candidates. Sounds to me like Conservatives were more interested in sending the RINO packing.

Well, the Dems have to try something. They see what is down the road: the 2010 census and, after that, reapportionment. By overplaying their hand after the 2008 election, they have alienated the very voters they need to keep their power to draw up the new voting districts in the states. They can't afford to lose that power in Wis. or any state. So expect the pressure on Barrett to be extreme! It's not just about 2010; it's about the whole next decade!

Barrett has a sweet spot as Mayor of Milwaukee. It's his job for as long as he'd like to keep it, and he has the potential of being a huge hero if he manages to turn MPS into something productive. A run for governor, even with the support of an unpopular president, would seriously jeopardize Barrett's political future...
