GOP: THE STUPID PARTYBy Charlie Sykes
New York Republicans got a rock in their trick-or-treat bags over the Halloween weekend, as Dede Scozzafava ripped off her million-dollar Republican mask and revealed herself to be a Democrat. It was never a very good disguise, but every previous attempt to peer beneath it was punished with stern lectures from Newt Gingrich and the rest of the party establishment. The bags of contributor money Republicans handed to the Scozzafava campaign would have been more usefully spent hiring detectives to trail ACORN operatives, and keep Democrat voter fraud down to manageable levels. The Scozzafava campaign is the latest dreadful mistake from a party establishment enchanted by the mirage of the perfect moderate candidate. For Republican voters, it seems like every winter is the winter of their discontent. Many of the GOP’s boneheaded mistakes come from exactly the same source as the Democrats’ boneheaded mistakes: the tendency to believe the media action line about themselves. This produces arrogance in the Democrats, while the Republicans are like awkward, lovestruck teenagers – terrified the slightest bit of confident self-expression will blow their chances with the cute moderate in the pink sweater seated beside them in homeroom class. They suffer beneath the same irony that crushes every awkward teenager, since confident self-expression is exactly what is needed to connect with the object of their affections… assuming they’re not obsessing over someone they never had a chance with anyway.

@Fred from LIB-Land - I don't know all that much about Hoffman in NY, except that he calls himself a Reagan Conservative - can you prove he's gay-hating, etc.? By the way, he's hardly a clone of Palin - he looks nothing like her... please keep up the stereotyping of Conservatives - you energize us - see you in 2010

Wow!!! You conservatives have finally figured out how to beat us dems. We'll never have a chance once every GOP candidate is a Bible-thumping, open-carrying, gay-hating, tax-cutting for the wealthy, clone of Sweet Sarah. Woe is us.

Yes, the leadership of the GOP failure to distinguish itself from the Dems hurt them. Certainly, there are many GOP politicians that are conservative, but those must be encouraged and party leaders must be replaced.

Rush Limbaugh outdid himself yesterday with a really prescient dig at GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava, saying she was "guilty of widespread bestiality. She has screwed every RINO in the country." We will always lose with guns, God, gays and tax cuts, for those who pay the taxes.

Welcome back, Walt, and amen! No money for RINOs and their party enablers. No money for parties that let the opposition and the media pick their candidates. Support candidates who value liberty in word and deed - DIRECTLY. I've "held my nose" long enough. Let the RINOs either hold theirs or get out of the way!

This same GOP infighting will play out next in the GOP senate race in Florida. Charlie Crist has been a solid GOP player. A stalwart supporter of gun rights, right to life, and fiscal restraint. However, he is about to be cannabilized by Tea Party conservatives who want an even farther right "conservative" candidate w/strong ties to their more radical POV. This could be the start of a war in the GOP

Conservatives, not people that just identify with the Republican party, need to have their voices heard. Many of our organizations become a mess due to the fact the leadership is more interested in themselves than the people they serve. Or is it due to the camera lens being pointed at them?

They didn’t fool me. All of these request for money I get from the GOP, Congress and Senate I do fill out their little surveys and I DO send back; but when it comes to the last questions “will you help us” I check the YES box and in place of the check they wanted I send them a copy of a computer donation slip showing the money THEY wanted was sent to a CONSERVATIVE politician who speaks for me. I also send a note saying I’m tired of sending money into their RINO supporting “BLACK HOLE”.
